Am I the only one who found this marriage odd or ironic? When you look at the two characters they are so different. Denise is a hippie for the 80's, wearing those weird clothes, her character was probably a liberal. Martin, millitary man, his character was probably a conservative.
I find as one of those opposite attracts couples like Sam and Diane on Cheers, Dwayne and Whitley on a Different World, etc. |

That's true. It was a little ironic, but it was still alright, and i guess it could happen in real life too. good observation though.

I found the marriage pretty odd too. It was the final straw for me in seeing the Denise transformation. She started out normal the first season, and got weirder and flakier as the seasons progressed. Then she shows up with a new husband, who is nothing like her. I actually didn't find the marriage unbelievable though, since they seemed to get along fine. Of course, everything was happy-go-lucky on the Cosby Show. Anyways... if you really think about it, the strength of this marriage could be really unbelievable. The new Ditz Denise couldn't make up her mind about anything. She couldn't do anything. One job after another, quits school, goes off to the Safari (was she trying to find herself?), and boom, she's married! And after knowing him how long? It's not like married life matured her either. She still didn't know what to do with herself after she was married to him. It was suprising that in the middle of all her created chaos, she was able to pick a husband, and stick with him. Most things she bailed out on, (including her stepdaughter--nice) but not her husband. Of course they weren't together a lot of the time, and they lived the lush life with her parents.
I've spent far to much time analyzing this already, but I really wonder when Denise straightened out, and did she do it in time, or did she bail out on Martin too? The later years they finally lived on their own, right? That was the true test to see if the marriage was believable, but they were written out of the show and we will never know. |

Just brainstorming here but if you think about it, when denise went to the Safari, she really had no direction and was a free spirit. i think in college she realized that she was so not ready for the real world, so like everything else she ran away from it, but i think in the safari after meeting martin, he brought a sense of direction to her life. Aside from the fact he had a kid, he was a navy man who authoritative, i believe the armed forces part of martin appealed to her because of maybe cliff and his background in the armed forces(i believe he was in the army or marines for a short while). You know they say that daughter's are attracted to guy's that resemble their father's sometimes. This could be an example here, the father and even grandfather have some sort of armed forces background which might appeal to denise. And to tell you the truth, denise marrying martin after a couple of weeks isn't surprising because she was that type of person, if she felt something in her heart strong enough she would definitely go ahead and do it. More times than none it would be without thinking. So that's why she married Martin.
Last but not least, i think that Denise would not have bailed out on Martin, and not Olivia, because I think she started to straighten out later on, with her direction in teaching, and everything else. I think once olivia came back she would grow nicely into the wife position along with her inspiring teaching job. Though she wouldn't have the constant parental guidance to help her, I think she couled still make it. But like Cashodeen commented, i might have analyzed this way too much too... but whateva. |
