I love this genre. I don't like really gross "splatter" movies, but I do love a good scare now and then. Here are some good ones that come to mind:
Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein The Abominable Dr. Phibes Arachnophobia Arsenic and Old Lace Candyman The Dead Zone Dracula Has Risen from the Grave Dr. Phibes Rises Again The Exorcist The Faculty Fright Night The Haunting Interview with the Vampire The Masque of the Red Death Mothman Prophecies, The Nightmare on Elm Street (etc.) Ninth Gate The Omen Pit and the Pendulum Prom Night Psycho Salem's Lot Scream The Serpent and the Rainbow Sixth Sense Vampires (John Carpenter's) Vertigo I love the old Brithish films made at Hammer Studios, and most movies with Vincent Price. When I was in college in Cleveland, on Friday and Saturday nights, they would have these "Monster Chiller Horror Theater" type shows that would introduce these horror movies, most of which were so bad that they were good. They were hosted by a small group of people, often in scary costumes, who would do amusing, little skits during the commercial breaks. My friends and I would (after doing our homework, of course) order a pizza, and stay up late and watch them. When I graduated and moved to Pitssburgh, there was a similar show hosted by someone who called himself "Chilly Billy." Again, more funny skits. Since I moved to Florida, there's been nothing like it, and I really miss it. |

One thing that's kind of fun is when some of these movies, like, say, "The Pit and the Pendulum," or "Scream," know that they're a little silly, and sort of play to it, while, ostensibly playing the movie absolutely straight.

Yes, but I'm terrible to watch them with. I jump at every little noise and usually have my hands over my eyes or my head covered by a pillow almost the entire movie.

My most recent ex-girlfriend was just exactly like that. She'd be completely enthusiastic about watching a scary movie, maybe even suggest it, but after ten minutes, she'd say. "turn it off." I once read Stephen King's "Salem's Lot," because she said she had liked it. I love King and loved the book. Later, she admitted that she had just read 10 or 15 pages, and gotten scared and stopped.

I don't like the real gory movies. I'm more into suspense movies.

I'm not wild about scary movies - a lot of times they are SO unrealistic, that they make me laugh, instead of scaring me.

I like some, but not the ones that are really gross. I don't usually get too scared.
