Question 1st Ep

Why doesn't the first episode air in syndication? Is it lost?

Here is a possible explanation on why the very first episode is not shown in syndication. After reading some information, the first episode is completely different from the rest of the series because the winslow family looks they live in a apartment instead of a house. And there is also a different female playing Judy Winslow in the very first episode. So i guess most TV stations don't want to confuse new viewers of Family Matters by airing the first episode and then showing episode two where there is a different female playing Judy. So this could be the reason. Hote the word-COULD

I found out the girl who plAyed Hilary in episode 1 was the girl who played Young Hilary Banks on a episode of the Fresh Prince. It's the episode when Uncle Phil remembers their old neighborhood before they moved to Bel-Air.

Her name is Valerie Jones, and she did have a guest appearance as young Hilary in an episode of FP.
I saw the very first episode of FM and it is confusing, because it's a very different set than the other episodes and their house doesn't look the same AT ALL. Plus the different Judy... But it's a good episode.

Which is the reason TBS doesn't feel that showing episode is a big deal.

Well, the most likely reason they don't show the first episode is because it is so out of context is probably right. Mainly because the first episode of so many shows is actually also the pilot episode - the one made essentially as a demo show for networks (and not always intended for broadcast). Then once the show is picked up, then they make changes, both to the cast, as well as the set. It's not uncommon to see MAJOR changes after the pilot episode.

Oh man, I wanna see the pilot! Sounds weird. I hope if this is released on DVD, they'll have it on there.

I love pilot episodes of shows. The Cosby Show's pilot has a different house, it says they have 4 kids instead of 5, and it says Cliffs name is Clifford, not Heathcliff(which was used in the rest of the series) and N@N still shows it. I think FM should come to Nick @ Nite. Who agrees?

I can't wait for the DVDs to come out, so we can finally see the pilot episode.

Is it the episode where Carl's mom moves in and at the end of the show they sing,"He's Got The Whole World In His Hands"? I know that WGN has aired this episode and I think that TBS showed it a couple of times. The first few episodes were without Steve in the cast. Another episode is where they have an inside garage sale and Laura sells Mother Winslow's quilt by mistake. TBS opted to show the Steve Urkel episodes only and I think that TBS showed these episodes a couple of times while WGN always had these episodes aired. Hopefully ABC Family will start with the very first episode when they start airing reruns of it.
