Nick & Editing

Don't get me wrong, I am glad that DS has returned to TV. However, in Green Hair, I noticed that several scenes were missing. For example, I remember Arnold's copper bowl on the patio collecting rain, but it wasn't included in the last time it aired. How do the original running times compare with Nick's running times?

I personally think that N@N may cut out scenes that they find are not important to keep the show time on length..but if the showtime will cut in with other shows then I partly don't blame them..

I disagree. They shouldn't edit shows. To hell with commercials, if shows like Facts, Diff'rent Strokes and Cosby Show (I have noticed scenes missing on TBS that I remember from the original airings) weren't "too long" before, why now? We watch shows like Facts and Strokes to be entertained, not to see commercials for soft drinks and other trivial junk. Even if the "cut footage" only amounts to the length of one commercial. Why not just forget the commercial and let us watch the show in it's entirity? People hate commercials unless it's the Super Bowl.

John McMillin -- First of all, on what you said about people hating commercials other than superbowls, do you know that for a fact? Because you should usually only state something you know is true..

Second -- I have seen that most of the time the scenes that were cut out from N@N shows were ones that had crued language or something controversial..I doubt N@N would just cut out scenes for nothing.

And last -- Please do not use the language you did to express your opinion about this matter. We don't want another fued like we had on the FOL Fan Ficiton board. You may use your opinion, please do. But please leave out words that may be in even the littlest way harmful to people..

Here's something I noticed on All In The Family. There were scenes that were added on All In The Family that I didn't see when it was aired on local syndication. I also noticed they cut out a scene too. I don't understand why we can't see the entire broadcast, instead of an edited one. During the early years of Nick-At-Nite, shows that they aired were shown in its entirely and had one block of commericals. Then around 1989, they began having two blocks of comericals during shows and probley missed almost 2 minutes of scenes edited to fill commerical time. I am also sick and tired of channels cutting the credits. For example, when Silver Spoons were airing during the 80's week, I wanted to hear the closing credits music, but it was interrupted - screen got smaller and couldn't hear the music because they had people talking about their favorite fad of the 80's. The point is this is now a regular occurrance. I hate it so much, I which they stop doing it. Don't they know that some of us might want to see and hear the closing theme of a show.

Blair, you shouldn't get so defensive. If all you want are the opening and ending credits with maybe 3 minutes of the actual program, that's good for you. But what I said made a lot of sense and I'm sorry it offended you if you'd rather watch endless commercials instead of actual clips of the episode.

I wanted to respond to this too. If the 20-30 secs worth of cut scenes from the average Diff'rent Strokes episode wasn't too controversial 20 years ago, why would it be now?

I probably should have explained more in my original post. When I record various shows on Nick from opening credits to closing credits, they average between 21-22 min. Now I know that 20 years ago, America did not have 8-10 minutes worth of commercials. Does anyone know the amount per 30 min slot at that time? The future is even scarier ~ How much less can be shown w/o losing the audience? 15 min worth of content? In all fairness to Nick, you get a whole minute more of show content than local channels/ other networks. Maybe the editing to achieve a 21 min show isn't causing problems with with 70/80's shows, but several small scenes that had previously aired of I Love Lucy were cut and it has affected the continuity of the episode. Maybe a solution to commercials would be to air 5 shows in a 3 hour period as networks love selling commercial air time. BTW, IIRC in DS "The Spanking" there was a short scene that was cut that cued the audience as to where Arnold hid before they searched for him outside of the apartment. Oh well.

First of all. We don't know if young children are reading the board so we should be mindful as to the language that is written on the board. That's how I feel.

Second, I think NAN cut down on commercial time and air more footage of shows. Hopefully Columbia House will come through.

On the FOL message board at Yahoo Groups, the moderator said she believes that commercial time is longer these days than in the 80's....right now 1/2 hour sitcoms run for approx. 22 min. and commercials run for 8 min. Whether this is true or not I don't know but I am guessing that it does cost the networks more to run shows nowadays, particularly reruns because there are less viewers watching reruns than first-run shows. Thus they need to have more commercials supporting them. (Don't take my word for all this, this is just a wild guess).

I am just as disappointed in the fact that scenes are being cut as the next viewer, if not more-- no one has complained about N@N cutting scenes more than I did at another discussion board.

In any case I am glad that some people here can clearly remember most of the scenes that were originally shown during the first-run in the 80's. Gee- I used to watch Diff'rent Strokes religiously when I was a kid in the 80's and I knew that show forward and backward then- unfortunately my memory isn't all that good now so I can't tell what scenes are being cut (unless I look at some of the closing credits to refresh my memory).

The original unedited episodes run about 24-25 minutes - the first Columbia House tape is uncut.
