Ever had a Roommate from Hell? I had one last year. This girl was such a pain in the butt. She was always complaining if the apartment was a mess, but she never did anything to help clean it. It was often her mess too, or her friends who were over all the time. Never helped with the housework when it was her turn to. Had her friends over at all hours of the night, even though she knew some of us had early-morning classes. She also complained when she was trying to study and we made the slightest noise. She would take long showers, but would pitch a fit if someone else was in there for more than 10 minutes. She would eat other people's food. She was such a pain!
Luckinly, I have good roommates this year. They're a little noisy sometimes, but other than that, they're cool. |

Yeah...the one I had my freshman year. She like...emulated me. She did everything I did, ate what I did, watched what I watched. It's like I had an evil twin.

When I was in college, the setup was groups of six people of the same gender in a "suite." Everyone had his own tiny room, and shared a common area with the others, so everyone had five roommates. The first semester freshman year, you just got people assigned to you. In that first group, I had some I liked a lot, some I liked a little, and a couple I hated and who hated me. The two I hated were upperclassmen and thought they were pretty hot stuff. It's my opinion that I would have been nice to them if they had been nice to me. I made do as best I could for a few semesters, and then got together a group of friends to form a new suite of six. I now realize I should have done that after one semeseter, but I was very young and didn't know any better.

Do parents count? We don't share a room per se, but we share a house...that's bad enough.

Oh My God yes. My first roommate freshman year was just evil. I don't know what it was, but she decided on day 1 that she didn't want to share a room, so she set about trying to drive me out. She kept telling me how rude I was to her parents and her friends - I had no idea what she was talking about. I once even apologized to her friends if I'd been rude and they just stared at me blankly and saying they hadn't noticed. This girl was odd. She kept trying to give the impression that everything was fine by her - but you could see she just hated me and all of my friends and all of my clothes and just about everything about me. She was just from Hell. I was still getting over depression at the time and she made it her business to tell everyone about it. She also kept asking me when I was moving and I finally stood up to her and said "I don't have a problem with you, why should I leave?" It worked - she was gone in a week. What's really weird is that I've since run into her on campus and she's just all "Oh hey, how are you? We never see each other anymore! Let's have lunch sometime!" She's acting like we're best friends now - so I guess it's true, the only thing she really had against me was that I was in her room. She's bizarre. I won't burn bridges if I can help it, but nothing could make me want to spend time with her again!
I got really lucky sophomore year though. I went in blind again, and I ended up with the perfect roommate. She and I became best friends, we did everything together. I don't think you can say "go in blind" or "don't go in blind". It really just depends on the person. |
