May I have the honor of being the first to comment on the Jay Leno interview last night? I know this will be the topic for discussion on this board today.
First, I appreciated Jay's comments about the Dick Van Dyke Show and about Dick and Mary personally. He was obviously very excited to have them on his show. I thought Dick and Mary both looked great, though Mary seemed a little awkward at first. She relaxed later. Overall, I thought the interview went very well. They were funny and at ease for the most part. There were two things I noticed, however. One, Mary cannot seperate her "Dick Van Dyke Show" self from her "Mary Tyler Moore Show" self. When Jay asked her to do one more "Oh, Rob!", she did it (terribly, I might add!) but then she had to add "Mr. Grant!" after it. Second, they showed a clip from TDVDS instead of "The Gin Game!" What's up with that? Weren't they there to promote TGG? I thought that was a little odd, though I loved the clip they showed from TDVDS. What did you think when Jay mentioned that the entire show was soon to be released on DVD and Mary said that she wasn't getting one penny from that. Dick said that he was receiving money for it and Mary said, "Oh well, take me to lunch sometime." Doug Denoff, what's up with that? Generally, I thought they were great on The Tonight Show. I look forward to seeing them on Larry King on Friday. Have a great day, everyone! Lolac

I didn't get to see it, and for that I'm very upset (I don't ever watch Leno and just flat out forgot about setting the VCR).
Having not seen it, it's hard for me to comment on MTM doing the "Mr. Grant" thing. In general, I feel like Lolac on this one. It really does seem like Mary "pushes", and has more appreciation for, the MTMS over the DVDS. The TVLand awards deal still bothers me in that I felt she kinda slighted the DVDS with her comments about the MTMS while receiving an award for the show that got her started! As for the DVDonDVD comment by Leno, I guess that's good news. I feel bad for Doug, because I know that he would have given us the entire series by now, if not for Mr. Brownstein! It looks like Image is gonna release season 1 to us in the early fall, from all indications. B&W "I will be tuning into the Larry King Show tomorrow, even though I normally watch Hannity & Colmes" fan |

I loved seeing Dick & Mary on The Tonight Show. I thought they both did very well.
And, I agree with Kristen about the "Oh Rob!" and "Mr. Grant!" thing. I loved hearing her say "Oh Rob!" after all these years. I've never heard her say it, other than on TDVDS. |

I saw the show. I noticed as Dick and Mary made their entrance, the theme from TDVDS played, then turned into the MTM theme. Mary seemed uptight to me but did relax a little. Dick is so naturally relaxed.
I took notice of her adding 'Mr. Grant' and thought it didn't fit in. She was there with her former co-star from TDVDS and they were plugging the DVD release as well as The Gin Game. If she was there as a solo guest, it would have seemed more appropriate. I can understand why Mary seems to appreciate her show more because it was, well, her show, but there's a time and a place for everything. I think they both looked good. She looks the best I've seen her look in a while. I think she should steer clear of sleeveless clothes. Although she's slim, has terrific legs and a youthful figure, her thin arms had an elderly look about them. I enjoyed the interview. It was great seeing them together again. |

Thank you, Lolac of Twilo,
For posting a review of the Leno interview. I was unfortunate enough to be out of town when it was on. I was in my hotel room, but a thunderstorm came up about the time the show began, and knocked out the power! I had no electricity in my room, or anywhere else in the hotel (I checked). Being in a business district of town, I thought about finding someplace where I could watch it. A sports bar was down the block, and they had power, but I chickened out. As for Mary's allegiance to her own show, I think it's sometimes misplaced. Let fans be fans, and don't try to steer them in a certain direction, which is what I feel she's doing whenever she does that "Mr. Grant" thing. As for her mentioning not getting paid for the dvd releases, it's true, but it was her choice. She opted for a salary increase as opposed to part ownership of the show way back in the 60s. She shouldn't have left that out. As much as I love Mary, I must admit she seems to make remarks sometimes that don't fit the situation. At the TV Land Awards, when Carl asked the DVDS cast onstage if they would be interested in doing a reunion "if the price is right," Rose Marie said, "Yes, we'd do it for nothing," at which time Mary said, "No! Don't say that," then gestured as if to put her hand over Rose Marie's mouth. Is she kidding? Probably, but it just doesn't play well to her audience. Steve |

BTW, if anyone missed this interview, NBC reruns eps from the previous week each night after Carson Daly's show, at least on my local NBC affiliate. Some other NBC affiliates carry the Tonight Show reruns (followed by last week's Conan O'Brien reruns) even later.
