Have any of you been a victim of poor sportsmanship? Today I have and I had to endure 45 minutes of it. I was practicing for softball and every time I didn't swing the bat the kids would tell me to swing it (the problem was that many of the pitches didn't even hit the plate). Some of my teammates were ragging on me about moving the bats out of the way of the base paths (I'm a catcher) and whenever I threw the bat back, they would criticize me and say "Don't throw it." One of those times I responded by saying, "Well, if you don't like the way I do it, why don't you do it yourself?" One of the persons said "Don't tell me what to do." That is such a double standard right there. With every time I was being made fun of, the worse I got at the plate and on the field. I don't mind being criticized about my playing once in a while but if I have to go a whole class period doing it, then I can't take it. I seriously hope this ends soon. What do you guys suggest I do about this? The coach was there and didn't do anything but I can't have someone holding my hand for the rest of my life on these matters. Maybe he'll do something about it. Please don't suggest I talk to him or any of the staff members. What can they do about it? I have had several talks with the coach and several staff members about these issues already.

I'm sorry, I really don't know how to help on this. Does it help if you ignore it?

My gym teacher... oh gosh, don't even get me started on her! Uuuugh!!!
She needs everything to be "perfect" and she ain't too good herself! -- Such a poor sport! And as for the softball thing.. I think you should ask the kids whether if they can do any better. But that's probably not the best solution.

That's part of growing up. It's miserable but it just is. First thing you need to do is believe in yourself, not feel overwhelmed by their behavior. It's not your fault that it happens to be your turn to take the brunt of growing pains. After you realize that, then you're going to have to decide what's the best remedy to the problem. If that means not holding back, and throwing a strike with the ball or a punch with your fist into the gut of the next guy who insults your integrity, then, do that. If it means ignoring them and trying to hit and catch and not feel bothered by them (very hard to do) then do that. No easy answers, but as I said in the beginning, you need to regain and hold onto your self confidence. If you have that then what you do in response to their taunting will gain you respect. That's your goal; getting respect.

Tell them to stop taking it so seriously. It's just a game in a little gym class - other things matter more in life. If they can't handle the truth, just ignore them. Don't let them dictate the way you play.

It was much better today. Much of the reason my teammates act this way is because we play other schools on Fridays. We lost a huge chunk of good players last year because those people graduated. We have also been undefeated since 1999. We are 2-0 this season so far and have outscored the opposition 30-8 but we haven't yet played the two schools who are the only ones capable of beating us. I think my team might be playing one of those this week.
