During the early seasons of Family Matters, Laura worked at a hamburger joint called Leroy's (which was burned down by none other than Steve Urkel--then after Leroy retired to Florida it became Rachel's Place). In the Perfect Strangers episode in which Larry's sister Elaine announces she's going to New York ("The Big Tomato!" according to Balki) in lieu of college, later that night they're all at a jazz joint (where Elaine plays the piano so beautifully that she would be the envy of many a concert pianist), and the blue neon sign outside said that it was Leroy's.

Just another connection between Family Matters and Perfect Strangers!!!

I'm trying to follow you, i do remember Leroy going to Florida and deciding to retire but you said in a Perfect Strangers episode someone named Elaine was at a jazz club and it was called Leroy's. Ok i have some questions.

1.Was the jazz club in new York?
2. Did Leroy say he was going to open up a jazz club instead of another restarunt?

No, the jazz club was not in New York (which Balki called the Big Tomato!). It was in Chicago, where Perfect Strangers (and Family Matters) took place. A heavy-set African-American friend of Balki's appeared and talked to Larry (saying "noogie", which Balki probably taught him--"noogie" was an Elaine ritual back when Larry was growing up in Madison, Wisconsin.)

If memory serves, no. IIRC Leroy from Family Matters was just going to retire.

Can you explain the connection between PS and FM again because I'm still having trouble following you. I remember Leroy deciding to leave and retire but i just need help with the PS episode. I'm just always eager to a see connection between these two shows because at one point i didn't consider FM a spinoff of PS. I ust didn;'t see how FM gave any evidence it came from Perfect strangers. Family Matters was a spinoff of Perfect Strangers. Harriette/Jo Marie Payton was the elevator operator in the Chicago Chronicle building on PS before she got her show.

Have you noticed that on The Brady Bunch, some of the cast members of Gilligan's Island (Jim Backus/Thurston Howell, III and Natalie Schaefer/Luvy Howell) appear as guest stars? Both series were produced by Sherwood Schwartz.

My take is that the name Leroy was used in the same fashion as Mr. Backus and Mrs. Schaefer. Leroy's was a jazz club on Perfect Strangers and a restaurant on Family Matters. However, you only saw the name Leroy's once during the PS episode if memory serves. I think Mark Linn-Baker and Bronson Pinchot made appearances on FM.

I remember an episode of PS in which Reginald VelJohnson/Carl Winslow gives Balki a poster of a wanted criminal (I think) as a member of, you guessed it!, the Chicago Police Department.

Bottom line: I wonder if the use of the name Leroy on the jazz club and hamburger joint are coincidental!

I know that Family Matters came from PS but for someone like me who never watched PS, it was hard for me to see any connection between the two shows at first. For example, If a person never watched All in the family and only watched the Jffersons they would eventually find out that the Jeffersons cme from AITF. So with Family Matters i think it's the 3rd episode when Harriet loses her job at the Chronicle but it still doesn't really give evidence to ONLY FM fans that Fm was a spinoff because larry and balki was not seen in that episode. Also when Larry and Balki appeared on Family matters, they played the role of other characters instead of their original perfect strangers characters.
