NBC Looks Ahead to Fall

APRIL 21, 2003 -

NBC is planning to introduce as many as four new sitcoms next season as the network makes comedy its top priority, according to NBC Entertainment president Jeff Zucker. Comedy pilots featuring Heather Locklear, Whoopi Goldberg, Tom Selleck and John Larroquette are all vying for spots on the net's fall schedule, Zucker said in an interview last week.

Although the Law & Order threesome, ER, The West Wing, Third Watch, Crossing Jordan and the probable returns of Ed and American Dreams limit NBC's need for new dramas, two new scripted hours are also likely to make the schedule, giving the network a likely total of six new shows this fall.

"Our goal is to continue to dominate among adults 18-49 using quality scripted programming," Zucker said. "It's really the comedy side that is our focus next season."

Heading into the current season, NBC had strong momentum. Boosted by the Winter Olympics, the network finished 2001-02 first in households, total viewers and adults 18-49. With fewer programming changes last fall than any other network (four nights were unchanged), only five new series (versus seven each for ABC, CBS and Fox) and a stable of upscale returning shows, NBC was the network to beat this season.

"With Thursday at the core and the Law & Order franchise, there was every reason to believe NBC would remain competitive," said Shari Anne Brill, vp/director of programming at Carat USA. "But because they sacrificed planning for the future in favor of stability, they put themselves in a vulnerable spot this season."

With five weeks left in the season, NBC's ratings among adults 18-49 are down on six nights of the week; total viewership is off by 14 percent; veteran series Frasier and The West Wing have sprung ratings leaks; CBS' Without a Trace has narrowed the gap opposite ER; and the network's leadership in the coveted 18-49 demo (six of the past seven seasons) is at stake. NBC's 18-49 advantage over Fox at this point last season -- 1.2 rating points -- has shrunk to just 0.3 this season, thanks largely to the success of Fox reality hits American Idol and Joe Millionaire.

"In this very strange year dominated by reality, Michael Jackson and the war, I think we performed very well," Zucker said. "Last year we won significantly because of the Olympics, but two seasons ago, we beat Fox [in 18-49 ratings] by four-tenths of a rating point. If you take Joe Millionaire out of Fox's ratings, we would beat them by that same margin this season."

Still, Zucker conceded that NBC needs to shake things up a bit. "Although stability is important, I think it's fair to say we will be more aggressive next season," he said.
While he would not confirm any scheduling moves, Zucker offered these scenarios for next season:

On Monday, NBC's sole night of year-to-year 18-49 ratings growth, Fear Factor, Third Watch and Crossing Jordan may remain intact. "Crossing Jordan really held its own opposite some tough competition this year," Zucker said.

Tuesday is a key night for NBC next year. With Frasier down; Just Shoot Me, In-Laws and Hidden Hills out; and 9:30 p.m. tryouts A.U.S.A. and Watching Ellie on the fence, another season of new sitcoms surrounding Frasier is likely. On Wednesday, despite surprising erosion for The West Wing (18-49 ratings are off 28 percent), expect the political drama to remain at 9 followed by Law & Order, with Dateline back at 8.

On Thursday, NBC might slot one of the four new sitcoms at 9:30, following Will & Grace, Zucker said. As for current occupant Good Morning, Miami, "it wasn't ready creatively when it began," resulting in some negative reviews that put the show at a disadvantage.

With encouraging ratings for Ed in its recent Friday 9 p.m. tryout, Friday at 8 may get one of the new dramas. Saturday will feature another three-hour movie showcase, and Sunday at 10 is being eyeballed for a new drama.

"We have not made a decision on Boomtown or Kingpin," Zucker said of the 10 p.m. Sunday incumbents. "The success of Criminal Intent [at 9] gives us a good opportunity there."

My two cents on the above article. NBC needs to let go of the strategy of three new sitcoms surrounding Frasier--that plan HASN'T WORKED YET! Frasier's already losing ground to ACCORDING TO JIM! They'll never move Friends out of it's slot, but they should really give it to Scrubs now while Friends is still on the air. I don't watch either show but Scrubs is the future while Friends & Frasier are nearing the end of their runs. They should have Friends lead off into the Tom Selleck sitcom, Scrubs lead off into the Heather Locklear project and Will & Grace lead into Coupling (the new Friends). I think Frasier should move to an 8:30 slot while Scrubs or Friends moves to a 9pm position. NBC needs to have a strong sitcom at 8. Personally, I wish they would just bail out on a Tuesday comedy lineup--flip West Wing & Frasier between Tuesday & Wednesday. A 2-hour Wednesday comedy lineup would be perfect counter programming against reality shows on ABC & FOX. ABC & Fox both have strong comedies on Wednesday, but neither have a full-two hour block & research shows that comedies work much better in two hour blocks. In the 90s, I loved NBC's comedy lineup but they let it get stagnant & the only one I watch is Frasier. Their Tuesday lineup has bombed for years, all those years of Frasier being surrounded by weak, unsuccessful new comedies has only helped weaken Frasier. I'm surprised & glad to hear that John Larroquette has a pilot for NBC, I've enjoyed both Night Court & the John Larroquette Show as well as Payne. His new pilot should be paired w/ Frasier like John Larroquette was with Frasier in the mid-90s & Night Court was with Cheers in the mid-80s.

Basically, it says that next season's comedy lineup is the same DAMN lineup as this year with Frasier, Friends, Scrubs, Will & Grace statying in place with 4 new shows in the same slots that their three new sitcoms failed last year. If NBC is truly serious about comedy they have to find DIFFERENT SLOTS to launch them. Sure, the qualtiy of their new sitcoms of late wasn't good overall, but they have to try different slots instead of new shows consistently FAILING Tuesdays @ 8, 8:30, 9:30 & Thursdays at either 8:30 or 9:30. Three Sisters failed, Fighting Fitzgeralds, AUSA, Emeril, DAG all failed. Tuesdays @ 8 is a black hole, it's even worse now with American Idol & 8 Simple Rules in addition to JAG. I wish they'd go with dramas on Tuesdays & comedies on Wednesday. Frasier can't be expected to anchor a Tuesday lineup alone--it wasn't able to when it was prospering--now it's slipping to According to Jim? NBC needs to stop treating its Tuesday lineup as an ugly step child & give it real attention not throwaway new shows that will only last a MONTH OR TWO! Both West Wing & Frasier are declining in ratings anyway, NBC needs to take CHANCES. Sure, in the mid-late 90s they shifted their schedule around perhaps too much, but they need to shift existing shows to allow a greater chance for new shows to prosper, instead of giving the same new shows, the SAME CRAPPY TIME SLOTS season after season after season! Next season is expected to be the last for Friends, they should give Scrubs a lead off position now somewhere on the sked. If Friends disapeears after next season, & Frasier's contract up, they will only have TWO anchor comedies: Scrubs & Will & Grace.

I think Good Morning, Miami is either cancelled or moving to another night.

Scrubs is by far much funnier than those two, IMHO.

Is ER ending next season, or is it coming back for season 11?

I wouldn't expect Ed to be back next season. It's really gotten terrible, IMHO.

Coupling the next Friends? I'll pass...

Frasier should have called it quits a few years ago.

NBC is dying. Good.

"Frasier", in my opinion, is the only quality sitcom on that network at this time. The writing is still amazing and its about to wrap up one of its best seasons yet! It could go another 5 years, EASY!

Perhaps NBC should try to have more sitcoms with class and clean (in the classic vein of "Dick Van Dyke", "Mary Tyler Moore" or "Frasier") instead of a constant barrage of smutty, poorly-written sitcoms (like "Friends", "Will & Grace", "Scrubs"). Heck, even try a family cartoon in primetime (one like "Tokyo Pig" or "Pokemon")! Or, how about a family-friendly variety show!

The "Law & Order" shows are great. A fourth one certainly wouldn't hurt the peacock network. But, there other dramas need to go. They were idiots passing on the previous four Star Trek series. "Kingpin" was way too raunchy for network television and deserves to never come back. How about a new "Lost in Space" series? Or the rumored sixth "Star Trek" series.

NBC also needs to ditch the reality. Imagine the ratings if they repaired their family hour and offered TV-G to TV-PG scripted entertainment constantly. Some teens might not watch it, but the ratings would be great.

Heck, even try something REALLY daring by showing classic episodes of old sitcoms, dramas and cartoons!

NBC, grow up out of the gutter, keep the quality franchises ("Frasier", "Law & Order") and keep it unreal! You won't regret it!

NBC's wntire Friday slate's doing pretty good. Ed was a sure bet for cancellation, but since it does really well on Fridays now I doubt it will be cancelled. America's Most Talented Kid is winning it's slot as well so I doubt that they'll change its Friday lineup. I think they may bump "West Wing" to 8:00 on Wednesday & put Rob Lowe's "Lyon's Den" @ 9. "Coupling" is a sure-fire bet for Thursdays @ 9:30.

I wish NBC would attempt comedies on saturdays again, it would potentially be a good fit with SNL. I still think they don't have a chance with two new comedies Tuesdays @ 8, the competition is three times as strong as it was last year.

I think a comedy lineup on Saturday should happen instead of Tuesdays. And Hunter should definitely remain on the air to go with the Saturday Night comedies. I agree with Friends leaving the 8pm slot, it'd make so much sense and I think ER should leave Thursdays since it's also losing steam, possibly move it to Wednesdays and move the West Wing to thursdays since that has lost steam on Wednesday nights. Whatever ends up happening, NBC will still put the same garbage on at the same times.

And Hunter should definitely remain on the air to go with the Saturday Night comedies. I agree with Friends leaving the 8pm slot, it'd make so much sense and I think ER should leave Thursdays since it's also losing steam, possibly move it to Wednesdays and move the West Wing to thursdays since that has lost steam on Wednesday nights. Whatever ends up happening, NBC will still put the same garbage on at the same times.
