Question A Sequel?

I just checked on the DVDS official web site and Doug Denoff has posted on there that Carl Reiner has announced a sequel to the Dick Van Dyke show. Would you consider what Carl Reiner is doing a sequel or a special? Maybe for me it is a matter of semantics. A sequel seems to me to be something more ongoing whereas a special is a one time thing. Maybe I'm just bored and need something to wonder about! I don't know. When I read it, it just struck me wrong. I wish what Doug Denoff would post on that website is an update on the DVD on DVD series. I am getting impatient for that! Lolac

From what I've heard, the whole thing is very much still in the "talking" stage. So probably Carl isn't even sure yet what it's going to be. I hope it's a 2-hour movie, though. I think that's the only way he'd have time to provide an adequate update on all the characters plus have some sort of present-day storyline.

I agree, Kristen.
I don't know how Carl could think he could do it in less time!
Which brings up something I've felt for a long time. There seems to be a hesitance toward this show by it's creators. It's come up on this board before, but try and find a key chain, poster, T-shirt, or calendar of TDVDS, just as you can with lots of other classic TV sitcoms, and you'll be disappointed. Look at how long it took to even get a discussion of a reunion show from Carl. And, as we know, the show should've been on dvd a long time ago. It's as if someone somewhere is saying, "Nah, that'll never sell. People aren't really interested in this show anymore!" Don't you get that feeling?
Thank God for TV Land, or I believe this show would be off the air. Don't doubt it, it happened to "Green Acres." The owners of that show decided it just wasn't interesting anymore, and are keeping it in a vault. I think the show is hilarious!

I agree with you, Steve. I can't understand it! This is a great untapped market. Look at I Love Lucy. Greg Oppenheimer (the son of one of the original writes, Jess Oppenheimer), has been tireless in his efforts to promote that show. There have been at least 3 different DVD releases (I subscribe to the Columbia House version), he has written a book and he constantly keeps his e-mail subscribers updated. TV Land has promoted I Love Lucy merchandise. There is no The Dick Van Dyke Show merchandise on the TV Land site. Doug Denoff, Carl Reiner et al. are underestimating their market and their audience. It is a shame. They could be making a lot of money and we would have the Dick Van Dyke Show memorabalia that we want and our DVD collection. This is so annoying! Doug, are you out there? Are you listening to us! Lolac

Even though I'd love to have a dvd keychain, I can understand why the creators wouldn't want to market the show. It's kinda like when a music artist sells their songs for commercials, you look at them at sell-outs. However, that doesn't explain why it's taken so long for a reunion.

Question Reunion?

Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore at the Emmys '02

CBS is talking about a reunion that would pick up the story of Rob and Laura Petrie 40 years later. Carl Reiner is reportedly working on a script, and co-stars Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore have expressed interest. So has Larry Matthews, who played son Ritchie Petrie.
