Post Beaver's Friends

Which one of Beaver's friends do you like the best; Larry, Gilbert, Richard, or Whitey?

I liked Larry but somehow I can't picture them as friends as they got older. He really didn't have one best friend later on just a group of friends.

I liked Larry too. In the early years, Beaver spent a lot of time doing things together with Larry, and got into trouble quite frequently also! Even though Whitey was there in the beginning of the show's run, Beaver didn't spend as much time with him as Larry. But Larry was a great character for the show, and really made the show what it was in the beginning. You have to wonder how the show would've been if he had continued to appear on the show in the later years.

I liked Larry also. My favorite episode with Larry in it, is the one where he runs away from home and hides in Wally & Beaver's bathtub. Does anyone know why Larry left the show?

I agree ... Richard was the best. Whitey was mean ... he got Beaver in trouble, Larry was a whiner and that other guy ... Gilbert was just a small Eddie Haskal.

To the person who asked about Larry leaving the show-he and his family moved to New Jersey. I agree that Larry was the best-I wished he could have stayed on the show longer. Richard was ok, and Gilbert was a wise-guy. Whitey was cute, but we never saw much of him.

I always liked the episodes with Larry the best...

Whitey, at least as I remember the show, didn't really seem to hang out with Beaver much on a one-on-one basis...he was more of a "face in the crowd". He had a lot of great lines though, but it seemed like he and the Beaver didn't play that much together unless there were other kids around too. Maybe the producers only wanted Beav to have one "best friend" at a time.

Which leaves Larry, Gilbert and Richard. I definitely liked Larry the best, but I also think the show was at its peak in those years, before puberty set in. Richard was ok, too. Gilbert was a troublemaker, and he could be a funny character sometimes. But really though, I think the chemistry between the Beav and Larry was the best.

Yes, Gilbert was a troublemaker, but so were all of Beaver's other friends, including Larry.

Just by memory, I can recall that Larry tricked Beaver into thinking there really was a 'spanking machine' in the principal's office, so Beaver went into the office and got locked in. Whitey conned Beaver into climbing the billboard to see if there was real soup in the giant cup, and Beaver 'fell in.' And Richard gave Theodore Cleaver's name and address to a police officer who caught him breaking windows and asked for his name. Gilbert tricked Beaver into making a big face in their class picture, but he wasn't really more of a troublemaker than Beaver's other friends IMO.

For some reason Gilbert gets a bad rap that should not be his to the exclusion of the other guys.

I agree. All of Beaver's friends were troublemakers at times, not just Gilbert. Actually, I think maybe Larry got Beaver into trouble more times than anyone else did. Also, Beaver fought with Larry more than he did with any of his other friends, but they always made up. I still like Larry the best though. I think he was probably Beaver's closest friend.
