OK, I happened upon this toon by chance and unexpectantly found out I like it. N's rebroadcasting most of them but even those are getting cut to ribbons for no good reason. Here are a few of many examples:
1. In 'The Daria Hunter', they only have Jake stumble onto Mr.DiMartino's foxhole and get panicky then have Mr. D. chew him out but edit them becoming friends- and drunk. Yet, Jake gets chastized by Helen then stranded at the paintball jungle so it's not as though there's no consequences for getting drunk were originally depicted. 2. In 'Jane's Addition'- In the Pizza King closing part, Jane chews Trent out and is seen mouthing the word 'D--n!' yet her actual exclamation has been editted by the sound folks. But anyone who could read lips. .or follow along the conversation can figure out what she said. 3. In 'Is It Fall Yet'- Jane gets introduced to an adult character at art camp but virtually all their subsequent interactions are editted out- despite the fact that the attempted seduction by this character is key in motivating Jane to resume her platonic friendship with Daria. 4. In 'Lucky Strike' a substitute teacher makes creepy overtures towards Tiffany which, after school, Quinn reports to Helen who then is seen calling Ms. Li to fire this teacher- resulting in Daria being drafted as a replacement sub the next day. Yet, the N censors this so that the sub barely gets a word out- then, next thing Daria is seen being called into Ms. Li's office to become a the replacement sub but NO reasons are given. Despite the fact that the sub's creepy overtures are swiftly punished and a concerned parent (Helen) is shown compelling the school to be rid of the creep, this whole sequence is cut. And, ironies of all, The N's own promos and short subjects that they themselves have produced often appear to revel in boorish, coarse and juvenile attempts at humor. Why would they think that these are admirable yet get all priggish towards 'Daria'? 1. A teenaged boy is shown having his picture taken between two attractive girls but disgusting them (and this viewer) by breaking wind and the sound of chortling is heard. Yeah, more important to gross out girls than show consideration. 2. In the 'Ouch Comic' cartoon short 'This Little Piggy', the narrator not only goes into nauseating detail about how he lost his lunch over the smell formaldahyde, but the trails of said lunch are actually depicted in said cartoon! 3. Several teens are shown at a card game and two boys belch but, instead of doing the traditional girl thing of rolling her eyes or reprimanding them, the girl belches LOUDER than them- and the words 'Real. Girl Power' are posted under. Oh, yeah, that'll impress the suits to promote her through the glass ceiling-NOT! What's with The N? |

The Daria Hunter? Is that where the kids and teachers are playing paintball? I also noticed in that one that when the man hating science teacher starts to jump on Mr. O'Neill and start making out with him (which is only shown for a couple of seconds anyway with a quick cut to the next scene), they cut that out and also cut out the part where they show Britney and Kevin making out on the schoolbus in "Malled". They still show Daria's sickened reaction to the smell of the cheap perfume but the brief shots of Kevin and Britney are cut. I always hate when a network does this. They shouldn't even bother showing a series at all if they're not going to show it uncut and in its entirety. I hope pay cable completely takes over someday so that all shows will be completely unedited and the only commercials you see will be between shows. The N also pisses me off by waiting an extra season to show Degrassi episodes that originally aired the previous season in Canada or not at all so far with the case of some second season episodes.

Daria and its related show Beavis and Butthead are among ther VERY FEW 1990s toons that I do like...
Daria definitely reminds me a bit of Velma Dinkley ("Jinkies! I've lost my glasses") in the original and the live movie (LEGALLY BLONDE'S Linda Cardinlilli) SCOOBY DOO. It's probaly been mention elsewhere but Janeane Garofalo is wrongly identified as being Daria's voice, which is actually the voice of Tracy Grandstaff, who also plays many BEAVIS/DARIA females incl.on B&BH Kimberly whom B&Bhead were trying to grope (1996's SEXUAL HARRASSMENT).In other words she's the female Mike Judge. |

By the way, that's Courtney Thorne-Smith in her 1998 ALMAY ad.

Thanks for the details about the edits. I've been watching it on the N recently, and many of the episodes I'd never seen before. Knowing there were scenes cut out makes them make a lot more sense.

Jesus, are there still people who think Janeane Garafolo was the voice of Daria? Well let me help those who still do: This is Tracy Grandstaff http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0334935/ |
