Anyone able to tell the character's name of the elderly fire chief befriended by the "Beav"? Can't ever recall seeing that episode to begin with.....

It was Burt Mustin (sp?) He was a veteran actor who played many roles over the years, including a recurring one as Mr. Quigley on All In The Family.

IGNTBone is correct. Burt Mustin is the actor's name. I wouldn't have known that (and perhaps no one else would ever have, either), except for the fact that TV Land devoted an entire commercial (complete with original score and lyrics) to the actor Burt Mustin a couple of years ago, and they showed some of the many parts he played. It was a pretty funny commercial, as are most of TV Land's orignal c'mmls. I think (I'm not sure) that one time he played an old man on the Brady Bunch who's father was killed by Jesse James in "that" episode.

Yes, Burt Mustin (a.k.a. "Gus") appeared on LITB quite often early in the series. But as the show went along, it seems that his character was used less and less, and I believe his last ever appearance on LITB was during the episode, "Beaver's Fear." Gus gave Beaver advice about going on a roller coaster, and told him to remember "Gus and the net, Gus and the Net." I found it kind of funny that the first fireman character in the very first episode was named Pete, not Gus. Then Gus was used ever since. Neat fact there.

Didn't Gus also play the bank guard with the gun that was always breaking into pieces in the Andy Griffith show? Gus slept a lot in Mayberry too!

As an Andy Griffith fan, I can say yes to the last question. His character name was Asa. He was the bank guard.

Actually, it was someone else who played the bank guard in Andy Griffith, not Burt Mustin. I can't remember who the actor's name was who played the bank guard, but I know it wasn't Burt. Burt Mustin played one of the town citizens in TAGS, I remember him well in the episode where Andy is away and Barney is left in charge. Barney arrests practically everyone in town, and Burt played the character who was fighting with another citizen about a disputed checker game. I can't remember all the details about this, and I am looking up the info. Will post more about this issue later, if I find it.
