why do the recent sitcoms have short opening themes? I mean they are usually like 10 seconds long at the most. Olders ones like Family Matters, Full House, Mama's Family, ect are a lot longer. Why do you think the opening themes are so short now?

For awhile themes songs went out of style it seemed. Family Matters totally did away with it in that later years. From a period from 1995-2001 or so, most sitcoms had very short theme songs or none at all.

However, they've made a comeback and many shows have them now, although not as long as the classic 1 minute long theme song that existed up until the early 90's.

Everybody Loves Raymond doesn't carry a theme song and neither does Frasier. Quite possibly a way to get to the story quicker.

Yeah they have gone out of style and I also think its because shows are alot shorter these days and I'd personally would like more of the actual show than a longer theme song

Everybody Loves Raymond does have a theme song, this season they picked up Jungle Love as the theme song.

Everyone always talks about their fav tv show theme, but how can they now that they don't have any? I thinkt hey should bring back opening themes!

It could be that people just got sick of the long introduction to the show because it was taking away some of the show's time.

Wow, 30 seconds really wastes a lot of time? come on, that isn't a lot of time to waste. If the show wants more time, they can do a joke at the end of the credits instead of just showing bloopers or scenes from the show. Who's with me? Bring back opening scenes! Shows like One on One have them still!

no, that's not it. It's because the networks are facing a lot of competition these days from things like cable TV.
And, ad rates are going up, which means that they have to have shorter commercials so they can fit more of them in. Commercials help pay for the shows, so, unfortunately, that's a ongoing battle that's only going to get worse as time goes on.
20 years ago, a 30 minute show, minus commercials, was 25-26 minutes, and now a 30 minute show is 22 minutes!!! (minus commercials)

I think it is to crammed in as many commericals as possible and when this done the show is shorten. So a opening with credits showing and the actor talking is the norm now.
That is one thing I liked about shows of the 50's and 60's and even into the 70's and early 80's many had catchy theme songs.
How would people know what Gilligan's Island was about if no theme song. I think it's a shame. But to be honest I don't watch much television from the last 15 years. All mine shows are oldies.
