Gidget lasted 32 episodes for 1 season. (1965/1966)
I don't know why it got canned, but made a star out of Sally Field.

I read at tvtoom.com that the show did run for 1 season for 30-something episodes.

As to the reason why it got canceled was because the show failed to find an audience during it's original run.

They got canceled but during that same summer reruns were aired and the show finally found that audience it had so desperately needed.

Unfortunately, by that time Sally Field had already signed on to do another ABC sitcom - The Flying Nun.

Too bad! I really would of love to seen more seasons of this show!

I don't know why I said 66/67. It was 65/66.

I read a book about Sally and she said she wished Gidget has gone on longer. She didn't like the Flying Nun as much. The nun went I believe 3 years.

Default The reason "GIDGET" was cancelled was because of..

..."the competition". When she first appeared on ABC's Wednesday night schedule in September 1965 (8:30pm[et]), right after "THE PATTY DUKE SHOW", she was up against "THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES" on CBS, and "THE VIRGINIAN" on NBC...two shows that had most of the audience that should have tuned into "GIDGET". When ABC moved the show to Thursdays at 8pm {after "BATMAN"} in January 1966, "DANIEL BOONE" [NBC] and "GILLIGAN'S ISLAND" [CBS] were too much competition for Sally. The fact that there WERE viewers watching "GIDGET" during summer reruns came too late for ABC to renew the show for another season.

Any questions?
