Were the Grady episodes written for Red Foxx and then tweaked for Whitman Mayo? Seems like that the case in some of them, but in some others I'm not so sure Foxx could have pulled off what Mayo did like on Lamont Goes Karate and the Wild Parsley episode. However, the one with Ron Glass as the ex-con seems to have been written for Foxx and just tweaked a little to let viewers know where Fred Sanford was. Another reason is that Grady was so antagonistic towards Esther in some episodes when there was no indication of serious dislike between the 2 in previous episodes. What do you guys think?

It appears just from seeing the episodes that they were written for Redd. Many of the lines were similar on other episodes written for Redd.
The dislike for Esther HAD to be there. After all, THAT is what really made her character funny. If Grady had gotten along with Esther, there would be no comedy there. Stromba |

My favorite episode of Grady without Redd was the episode "A Little Extra Security" where Grady gets an extra Social Security Check and spends it all in Las Vegas and Aunt Esther comes when she finds out what he has done and they have a super exchange about what he did in Las Vegas.
Grady: We went to Las Vegas and saw 2 great shows. Esther: Sodom and Gomorrah Grady: No, no. Nipsey Russell and Harry Belafonte
