Question met Lucy or Desi?

Did anyone meet Lucille Ball or Desi Arnez, or know someone who did? If so where and when did they meet them?

Lucy was the grand marshall of the Apple Blossom Parade in my hometown back in 1964. I wasn't born yet but years ago I worked beside someone ( who just died recently ) who actually had her and Gary on his morning radio show. He wasnt impressed!!

Like Dick Clark he met a few years later, he thought Lucy "...loved herself to much".

He did tell me two very interesting things about Lucy and what she said in that interview.

1. Lucy said that she only did the festival to give Gary some needed PR since so many people dont like him. Oh Gary didnt say a single word.

2. He brought up Vivian Vance who was then doing Lucy Show with her and she refused to talk about her.

oh...but she did brought up the kids on the show. saying they were allright but she could have done better.

I would have paid anything to hear Lucy on the Joe Pasquali -WINC-AM 1964 broadcast. In fact at the Lucy-Desi Days in Jamestown, NY one of the authors of the many Lucy books out there told me that even she was looking for a tape of that interview.

Should be very interesting !!!

Oh this sounds charming! Do you know if she was really putting him down or if she said it to be funny. (which still would be weird, even if it *is* true...)

Refused to talk about her because she seemed mad at her? Or because they were so close and had such high regard for her that she didn't talk about her to anyone? What was your sense on this? Do you know what the jist of this conversation was?

Were these Desi Jr. and Lucie she was referring to?

Thanks for any insight you can provide!

The Lucille Ball-Joe Pasquali radio broadcast from May 1964.

Gary Morton and Lucy were not married very long when she did the interview plus a lot of people were still "upset" that Lucy and Desi were no longer married let alone both maried different people. Different era. Thats my guess why Lucy said what she said about people not liking Gary Morton.

The kids she was talking about were from the Lucy Show. Maybe Lucy really felt that way about Candy Moore, Jimmy Garret, and Ralph Hart because it wasnt all that long after the interview that
the kids were dropped from the series, not even mentioned at all. except for Garrett and even for him only in 2 shows. I always thought dropping the kids (I can see Ralph Hart with Vance wanting to leave ) wasnt a good idea for the Lucy Show.

Vivian Vance, dont know why she refused to talk about her. They did have a hot/cold friendship, maybe it was a "cold" day.

I have never heard the interview itself though I did see a picture taken of it. It was published in the local paper the day after Pasquali got fired in 1999. You can tell that Lucy wasnt happy about something.

As far as I know the interview has been lost to the ages for years.
Even Joe himself told me years ago that he felt there would be no value in it and thats why he never kept a copy of it.

Only if he knew.

I actually get that feeling in a lot of post-ILL pictures that I see of Lucille Ball! I'm sure everyone's seen the shot of her and Desi at the Desilu stockholder's meeting, where they're sitting at the table side by side and she's looking over at him cross-eyed and very obviously perturbed about something. I really get the feeling that after ILL ended and subsequently her marriage to Desi as well, Lucy's happiness was utterly taken away. Even though she remarried she had to be both Lucy *and* Desi in her professional career afterwards (i.e. both on camera as well as learning the behind the scenes stuff too) which I think took a great toll on her. There was no more of her just being in the spotlight taking in the glory while Desi made sure everything was perfect all around. It then fell all on her, which she reacted to by being a stickler for perfection (not that she hadn't been before, but...) which can very likely translate into her sour and rigid attitude a lot of the time. I don't see her come across like that during ILL on or off camera. Afterwards is when I think she started being ticked all the time!

In any case, I didn't really mean to get into all of that - I just wanted to say thanks for sharing your thoughts about the interview! I really appreciate it!

I was born in the year Desi died and I was too young to see Lucy back in the 80's.

Well, not to jump on anyone's case but to come to Lucy's defense........I do not blame her for looking at him "cross-eyed" one bit! Look at the hell he put her through and how he publicly embarrassed her! The woman had a very hard life.....starting with her childhood!

It's not that "off topic." Many real-life conversations end up going in many different directions. I won't close it.

Its ok John onlyonelucy was just responding to what someone said about her looking cross at him it wasnt off topic. Just let it slid by your trying to hard to reconcile with everyone just take it slow and you'll earn everyone's respect back. No rudeness here just advice. Like when people told you to keep the comments at a minimum well its like that.
