Thumbs up After School TV? Uh-Huh - Uh-Uh (3/31/03)

After School TV? Uh-Huh – Uh-Uh?
By Brett Ferino
CHIT CHAT COLUMNIST

I really wanna get this straight here! You are all probably beginning to wonder about this. Why are many of these syndicated broadcast stations (WB, FOX, UPN, etc.) beginning to stop it al the sudden with their afternoon cartoon block..

Last January, FOX Kids Worldwide had gone out of business due to low ratings of toons. Their daily afternoon block was canned last January and the Saturday morning continued until September of ’02. Now they have the great FOX BOX with TMNT and other great stuff.

Due to no change in ratings over the past 2 years, UPN has decided to end all children’s programming in September of this year on their “Disney’s 1 Too Block”, which they’ve had since “Disney Afternoon” was canned in the fall of 1999. Now all we’re gonna have is those great toons in syndication.

Usually after school, I do other things besides TV. I use the internet, play video games, sit out on my patio and chill, etc.

If I usually wanna watch cartoons, and yes, I mean good toons, I watch Cartoon Network and Nick. Back when I was young, I seemed look forward to several of the best cartoons.

I’ve always enjoyed watching toons like TMNT, Mighty Max, Inspector Gadget, The Littles and a lot of Disney cartoons as well.

And will those shows be reran again soon? I hope so. And I do say so myself. And I do. Am I talking like a goofy voiced comedian or what? Who talks like that?

You should just thing about that!

A lot of these cartoons that come on today don't interest me anyway. I watch Cartoon Network, at least they show the good old toons that came on when I was a kid.
I used to like those Afterschool specials too. Do they still come on anymore? I don't get home from work till 6PM so I don"t have much time for afternoon TV.

I remember those good old days when cartoons and other fun shows aired after school and on Saturday mornings. Now, I rarely watch afternoon TV (too much crap) and I spend my Saturday mornings sleeping.

Anyone remember those Afterschool TV specials? I really enjoyed those.

Arrrgh, nothing at all comes on in the afternoons. I have discovered this during the past two days, as I am on spring break and have no life.

I can't begin to tell you how sick I am of seeing a million court/judge shows. Enough is enough, lol. There can only be so many.

And it seems like every local (at least where I live) constantly airs the same syndicated shows, constantly. Sure, they're in syndication, of course they're going to be on a lot, but every channel is the SAME thing, lol.

Okay, rant over.

Thumbs up Oh, fond memories......

Obviously I can't comment on the state of kids TV in America but kids TV in Britain - IMO - has definately gone downhill since I was a kid.
As a child I have fond memories of getting up early on a Saturday morning to watch 'The Raccoons' before 'Going Live' came on. Sunday mornings were a real boon, especially on school holidays. Channel 4 would show 'Pugwall', 'Betty's Bunch', 'Sharkey and George' and 'California Raisens.
BBC1 would offer up 'Heathcliffe and the Cadillac Cats', 'Ewoks', 'Paw-Paw Bears', Kissy-fur' and 'Rude Dog and the Dweebs'. While ITV would proffer 'Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventures',' The Wuzzles', 'Gummi Bears', 'Garfield & Friends', 'The Real Ghostbusters', 'Alvin & The Chipmunks' and 'Denver The Last Dinosaur'.

Jings. I wish I were 7 years old again. How simple things were back then............

I forgot about Going Live, it was great on Saturday mornings- I remember it was hosted by Phillip Schofiled and Sarah Green!
I always mixed between BBC and ITV, I never really watched the kids shows on Channel 4.

Remember Gordon The Gopher?? I have a puppet of him that my parents bought me for my birthday when I was a child.
Did you ever watch 'Motor Mouth' on ITV?? I remember it purely because it was Gaby Roslin's first TV outing.
What age are you anyway? I'll be 21 this year - are we in the same age group? Cos I have loads of TV shows that I remember from my childhood that noone is willing to discuss with me (a lot of my friends are either a lot younger or a lot older than me).

I don't really watch TV anymore. Except for some late nite stuff and the news.
