the arbitron ratings book has arrived and carlson is afraid to look at it.
the news is good for wkrp, its moved from 16th to 14th placed in the cincinnati market. andy becomes depressed feeling he has'nt accomplished anything as program directer. tired of packing and unpacking UP AND DOWN THE DIAL andy realizes that wkrp is more than a workplace its a FAMILY. my favorite scene in this episode is when venus senses andys frustration & gets to the heart of his problem. saying that andy can't fire the little guys(herb and les) because he can't fire the big guy because his mama owns the station. andy realizes that wkrp is home.(FOR BETTER OR WORSE) this is the first episode to feature arthur carlsons blueprints for the future wkrp station with his "think tank" and "walls for les nessmans office". the best quote is when jennifer refers to the blue prints as "dirty pictures" |

I referred to this before as a great episode and after watching it again I have to now claim it as a very good episode. The feel of it is WKRP as a family and that I enjoyed.
There are no guest stars. Everyone contributes (though Andy is in the forefront). It is not a very jokey episode (though there are some good ones) but a definite character defining one. Venus and Andy's conversation sums up the series and basically why we love it. It has a very homey kind of feel. Oh and Carlson and his "it's not a hiding place" is classic. |

A couple other things I noticed:
Bad music changes in syndication. What was Andy listening to when he spazzed in his office? Jan Smithers actually makes a flub - I checked it over and over - when she talks to Les and Herb she says "Shecond" instead of second. I know that's nitpciking, but I never noticed it. This episode is almost a prelude to "Most Improved Station." Whereas this episode sets the mood and feelings of everyone, MIS takes that background to the comic potential this situation had. |

the song that was replaced when andy spazzed out in his office is "goodbye stranger" by supertramp.
BABY IF YOU EVER WONDERED is a character study episode like WHO IS GORDON SIMMS? & SECRETS OF DAYTON HEIGHTS. one of the great things about wkrp is that its not a formula sitcom. for example one, two, three joke one, two, three joke. all of the comedy comes from the situations and strong characterzation. i think the nitpicking should be a standard feature in the episode discussions. it keep things interesting. i like you can watch wkrp over and over again and see something you have'nt noticed before. |
