I don't consider Three's a Crowd a spinoff because the Jack Tripper character was in the show. What can we call this show? We can't call it a new version of Three's Company because Jack was living with one girl so I can't figure out how to label this show. I do know it's not a spinoff of Three's Company.

Why can't it be a spin-off? Because Jack was a main character in Three's Company and then a main character in Three's a Crowd? Or because Three's Company ended so Three's a Crowd could be possible?...
I still want to call it a spin-off just because I see a spin-off as a television series built around a character from an earlier series. (Three's A Crowd was built around Jack Tripper from Three's Company.) |

(I edited my last post a little after you saw it--I thought maybe you thought a spin-off can only happen while the original show is still running. MY first guess was right--must be a secondary character.)

Spinoffs are shows that have one of the characters from the parent show. Last time I checked, Jack Tripper was on TC too. Just because he was a main character doesn't mean anything werm. I mean it's like Archie Bunker's Place: some of the characters (only Jack in this case, along with Vicky and Mr. Bradford who were in the last three episodes) are placed in an environment that was also shown on the show (Jack's Bistro). I mean even the creators consider it a spinoff, I don't think they'd be wrong....

Well Arche's Bunkers Place was still All in the Family-Just a 80 version of All in the Family. Three's a Crowd was just a new show. Not a spinoff. It was Jack Tripper having a new lifestyle. TAC was a continuation of just one character who was the main character. Now if it was janet or Terri then yes. So if Mary from Mary Tyler Moore was in another show as her Character from the Mary Tyler Moore would that also be a spinoff? |

Yeah, spinoffs usually are about supporting characters because most shows don't want to take main characters from their show while it's still on. But with TAC, TC wasn't on anymore. And the spinoffs with supporting characters seem to usually be more successful. werm. |

It was a spinoff according to producers SOLOMON. I would like to think of it as a continuation but it is a spinoff.
