Frank and Irene should have been seen more once Mike and Gloria moved next door - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I loved the characters Frank and Trene in the same scene with Archie. The both played off Archie very well Especially Irene, she and Archie going at one another was some very funny moments. I loved the performance of Frank and Irene in the episode "Archie is Cursed". These two were great additions to the show and it's a shame they were no longer seen after 1975.

You and me both, Solomon, I loved the episode where they first meet in the episode "We're Having A Hot One Here Today" where the Puerto Rican couple plan on moving in the McNabb house but Archie and Henry Jefferson are against it. And when Mike called the Housing Deal and Archie plays tug of war with Mike with the phone and Irene comes in,and Archie has the whole wire in his hand, and Irene said she wanted to use the phone,and Edith said,It's A Good Thing Too The Phone's Isn't Working,and Archie said, she knows that. Then Irene breaks out her tool caddy and Archie was astonished by it. Then Frank comes in and tells him that he knows how to cook,and Archie says,they have names for people like you. Then Archie makes a remarks about Italians and Catholics and Irene says that she's an Italian and Frank tells Archie that he doesn't mumble over his beads. I loved Irene and Frank in the episodes they were in. Just wondered why Vincent Gardenia left the show in the 1974-1975 season.

Vincent Gardenia left the show after his one and only season (1973-74) because he felt that he didn't have enough to do. Betty Garrett lasted into the 1975-76 season (the first one where the Stivics live next door), although I believe she only appeared for a few episodes at the beginning of that season. The producers wanted to focus on the main quartet, so Garrett left, too. There are no other regulars during the 1975-78 season other than the main quartet (unless you count Teresa, who appeared in four or five episodes in 1976-77).

Don't forget that Vincent Gardenia played 2 different characters on AITF before Frank Lorenzo. The one i remember vivdly was when he came on with Rue Mclanahan(blanche,the golden girls) as his wife, when edith didn't realize she answered an add for a couple to make friends with. Little did she know they were a couple of swingers that wanted to swap spouses.

Vincent Gardenia also portrayed the Bunkers' neighbor (I forget his name) that sold his house to the Jeffersons. (NOTE: This episode marked the first appearance of Louise Jefferson) Remember Archie asking him if he sold his house to Jews? The guy says, "No. These people are Baptists."

Yes,the one where The Jeffersons move into the neighborhood is a classic. When Louise comes over to borrow some cleaning stuff and Archie and Louise are alone they make the following exchange.

Archie: How did you like the Julia show last night???
Louise: Just fine. How did you like Doris Day???

Funny you should bring that up, I thought of that dialogue when I was watching 'Julia' last Sunday during the Boxset. It wasn't a bad show at all. Why did it only last three years (Julia)? Was it because AITF was on TV by then?

Yes,it was on in January 1971 when All In The Family premiered. The reason that Julia went off the air that year because Diahann Carroll didn't want to do the show anymore despite respectable ratings,and she wanted to spend more time with her daughter according to her Initimate Portrait on Lifetime.
