Question VAN HALEN - Desert Island Disc

You get one Van Halen album to take with you.
And I said Van Halen, not Van Hagar.

Which and why?

(I meant to post a poll, but ahh screw it)

I'm sorry, but I like the Hagar era better than the Roth era, so I'd have to make my disc either OU812 or For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. But if I HAD to take something from Van Roth, it would be either Van Halen II or 1984 (I have a hard time picking just one).

AKA, I'm surprised you liked the Hagar era better. Obviously Hagar is more talented than Roth, but Eddie's guitar playing and song writing was more crisp in my opinion.

I'd take Van Halen I or Fair Warning.

Absolutely true, but Roth's "showmanship" ruins it for me. I'm kind of interested in hearing the shelved album Van Halen recorded with DLR in 2000. We'll probably never be able to hear it, though. Now the band is without a record label (WB dumped then last year) or a lead singer. Could this be a sad end to a once-great band?

That's a tough call, I would have to go with...

"Women And Children First."

Why? In three words...

Everybody Wants Some.

Cool re: VH album

I'd also prolly pick Women and Children First" for "Romeo Delight", which is a great song. I've heard "Fair Warning" is a
great album, too (with "Mean Streets"), but I haven't heard it all the way through. "1984" has "Drop Dead Legs", but I think if I had my choice, I'd say,

the Cabo Wabo Bar on the desert island complete with all the massive band parties that were the stuff of legend--chicks, beverages, general mayhem--that accompanied Van Halen 25 years ago....

And I sure would also like to relive seeing them open for Black Sabbath in September 1978. I WAS THERE AND THEY ROCKED!!!!
David Lee Roth was saying stuff on stage in his usual rants--"Yeah, we just got back from Milwaukee enjoying Milwaukee's finest--AND I AIN'T TALKING ABOUT NO GAWDDAMN BEER!!!!"

Van Halen, the debut, is a quintessential rock album no cd collection should be without

It's been over a year, and Sammy's back in the band, but I've actually changed my tune. I pulled out the first six Van Halen albums, and they're MUCH better compared to the Hagar era.

I'm actually kind of embarassed I liked Van Hagar over classic Van Halen. It's probably because I came of age during the Hagar era. I still have fond memories of trying to read all the text in the "Right Now" video.

So, dlemond, if you'll let me change my vote, my new desert island disc is Van Halen II.

That would be my choice, if this is only the Roth era. Either that or 1984.
