Don't know for a fact but I think his contract was up. He had won Emmys in '61, '62 and '63 for Barney Fife and maybe he thought it was time to give the silver screen another try.

Okay, originally Andy and Don came up with that five year period. If the show made it to 5 years, they'd both be satisfied and could leave. Don remembered the five year deal and started looking for other work. He looked for some work and then he found out that Andy wanted to stay on the show. Don prob. couldn't get out of his movie contracts, so he left.
