Hi all! Just thought I would introduce myself after three weeks of lurking. My name is Mary Ellen Byrne and I’ve been a GI fan on and off for about six years now. I’m also a great fan of the 70’s show “Emergency!” and to a lesser degree “Adam-12” and “Dragnet” (pretty much anything produced by Jack Webb). I am also a member of my church choir, which has been the factor most responsible for my being a GI fan in the first place. I shall explain:
This whole adventure into GI fanhood started, as I said, about six years ago on Good Friday of 1997. At the 3:00 prayer service the choir was going to do a hymn called “The Wood of The Cross”. But Claude, our guitarist, kept thinking it sounded familiar, especially the music to the verses. So he sped up the tempo to double its recommended speed and found it was, in fact, the theme song to Gilligan’s Island! We didn’t believe him until he played it through for us at the rehearsal we had a half-hour before the service and he was right! It was! Now the tune isn’t exactly like the theme song. It isn’t anything Sherwood Schwartz could sue over but it’s close enough that it couldn’t remind you of anything else! An so with this little nugget of information imparted to us, every year on Good Friday you can pretty much put money down on what’s going to happen. We’ll get through the opening hymn alright, get to the reading of the Passion, sail through that, get through the General Intercessions still cool, but then we get to the Veneration of the Cross and that song! I mean, ever since Claude’s discovery, the rest of the congregation may be hearing—"And when my hour of glory comes as all was meant to be, you shall see me lifted up, upon a tree." In our heads we’re hearing—"The mate was a mighty sailin’ man, the skipper, brave and sure. Five passengers set sail that day. . ." well, you all know the rest! Now this moment is the most solemn, somber hour in the entire church calendar and here the choir is, for reasons known only to them ;-), desperately trying to fight back laughter! But this has also set forth a series of running GI-themed gags that have reached every facet of parish life. Fr. Donovan recently introduced a video sent us from the Bishop’s office by saying he didn’t feel like giving a sermon this week so he thought we’d watch some re-runs of Gilligan’s Island! :-D. Oh! There’s a great story connected to that but that’s for another time. This post is a tad long as it is. I do have one more humble opinion to relate. I do not wish to ruffle any feathers, but you may count me among those in the camp which say “Gilligan and Mary Ann?! No Way!!!!!” If Gilligan is going to fall for anybody, it’s going to be me! So that is the tale of this castaway who plans to be here for a long, long time (unless some CBS bigshot thinks that a “Gunsmoke” fan could better use my space). Thanks for listening! I hope this to be the first of many enlightening and entertaining exchanges. :-) |

Oh, I think the Professor and Mary Ann would make a wonderful couple but I think Julie and the Professor would make a better one!
Tell you what! I'll spend my time on the island with Gilligan and maybe you and I and our fellas can meet up for a double dinner date sometime. We'll have Mr. and Mrs. Howell serve, OK?! |

LOL!!! well, that may be fine for you two....but as much as i love Proffy...i have to admit....he's way too old for me. the Professor and Julie would be even more scandalous than the Professor and Mary Ann would be (by one more year...lol). BUT...through the magic of time and tv reruns....he won't ALWAYS be too old for me. lol. in about 15 years we can go on that there double date. heh heh.
i was actually contemplating writing a fanfic where i somehow go back in time and wind up on the island, Proffy falls for me (but being the decent man he is knows it's just wrong), and then i return to my normal life.....but on my first day at college i meet a very familiar looking student (guess who?) and he says "what, you think you're the only one who knows a thing or two about time travel?" LOL....i'm warped. my mind is an enigma. i did say CONTEMPLATING.....i don't think anyone would want to read that but me. tv character scandals....heh heh. if i went to the island there's no way i could try to hook up the Professor and Ginger. even though i'm a very strong supporter of those two....i'd want Proffy. Ginger doesn't deserve him. lol. |

**perks up** Excuse me? Is someone going after my man?
I'd alow it except ... well, we disagree over a very crucial issue. **clears her throat and cocks her head towards her avatar** So you see where that leaves us. **grin** J/K! Welcome to the board! You'll soon realize that I'm quite dramatic and take all MAG business quite seriously. But, hey, I'm fair and I'll leave you to your opinion. I do, in fact, highly enjoy Gilly. My men don't have to be buff or hunky...just funny and sweet. Hee. Oh, how I wish I could find a little Gilly for Prom. **sigh** LOL. (Okay, I'm gonna stop now). BTW, the story about your church choir - priceless! I love it. I once told someone that you can sing Amazing Grace to the GI theme and that kept them amused for the next three days. Hee. Welcome again and have oodles of fun! (Dude...did I just say 'oodles'? Dang...) |

Just disregard this post--I posted a message, realized I made no sense to this thread whatsoever, and it wouldn't let me delete it, LOL. Gee, I must be more tired than I thought, LOL. |

That fanfic idea is great, Julie! I'd LOVE to read it if you write and post it anytime in the future.
Time travel fiction is my favorite daydream except I don't usually fantasize about interacting with the characters on the island. I take it one step back and interact with the actors on the soundstage. This is a fantasy that has travelled with me through many a fanhood but the plot is basically the same. I travel back in time to an era relative to whatever particular fanhood I'm in at the moment but the shock of the trip has so traumatized me that I lose my memory completely. This makes me lost, lonely and frightened and I end up getting taken under the wing of the fan subject. (In this case, I'd be hired by Sherwood Schwartz and the GI production company for a job behind the camera). Little by little, as time goes by I start to get back little traces of memory but since these memories have to do with events of the future, nobody knows what I'm talking about and start to wonder about my mental stability. (For example, one of the cast might mention the date of September 11th and I, hearing this, immediately freak out saying how much I HATE that date. It's horrid! It's evil! It's the worst date on the entire calendar and I don't ever want to hear it mentioned again! Why? They all wonder. It's only a date in a month in the fall. What could possible be so wrong with it that I'd have so severe a reaction? My amnesia prevents me from knowing why myself. All I know is that I have a gut reaction to hate that date with all every once of energy in me.) Eventually I am found by my friends who begin to query all concerned at to what, specifically, my conduct has been while I've been with them. Sometimes they explain the events behind my outbursts or sometimes, not to alter the flow of history, their attitude is Well, perhaps you don't understand. Don't worry about it. You don't need to. We understand and, for now, that's all that is needed. Thank you very much for taking care of her while we were searching. We can take it from here. Then they take me home. I've tried to work this into a decent story a couple of times and somehow I just can't seem to make it work. Maybe it was just meant to be a little movie that I play in my head for me because I am the only one who would really understand it. JWood--I'm glad to be sharing the MB with a woman of the same exquisite taste in men as I have myself. Only one thing, what's an avatar? From your mention of it in your post, I assume it's something I am supposed to fear. |

Thanks, Courtney! I am not really up to speed when it comes to web page building. I'll have to go back into my profile and play around now that I know what an avatar is.
