I Don’t Want My MTV! I Might Need My VH1! How ‘bout BET?
By Brett Ferino
Chit Chat Columnist

Although I vaguely ever watch it, all I have to say right now is that MTV has gone downhill.

What is with “The Osbournes” on there? If they’re a British family, then they should be on BBC or something. And for other things like “Road Rules” and “The Real World”, are they good shows to watch?

Why was “Beavis and Butt Head” cancelled? After 200 episodes, they kicked the bucket?

And remember that show in the early 1990s that was hosted by Cindy Crawford? What was the name of that show?

And when MTV first debuted back in the early 1980s, all they had was music videos?

And over the years, they’ve had lots of short-lived programs. BTW, shouldn’t “Pop Up Video” be on MTV instead of VH1? Isn’t VH1 owned by MTV Networks and Viacom International?

And how come VH1 airs those not un-cut “The Most Outrageous Game Show Moments” specials? That has nothing to do with music. And yet one clip from “The Gong Show” where a lady is falling and her dentures fall out? I think that seems to be just odd.

And when BET was launched back in 1980, did they have rap videos? Puff Daddy and Nelly were not even around then. And the only non-rap video I’ve ever seen on that channel was that “For Always” by Atlantic Starr. I’m not sure if they had this in the beginning, but between 1995 and 1999, BET had all religion programming every Sunday. I don’t think it is that way anymore. As a matter of fact, I’ve never even had the friggin’ channel. Nor have I ever had BET Jazz and BET Movies.

Over the years, they’ve aired many sitcoms that have featured mainly, well – you know. According to Pavanbadal (PB), he has stated to us that they have the rights to “Soul Food” and “The Parkers”. There’s something else they have too.

And what did the “M.S.” stand for on BET’s now defunct web address? It was www.msbet.com. And don’t try typing it in. What will happen or will anything happen?

Oh yes, and in case you want the website for BET, just type in www.bet.com. And I’m not saying MTV’s website since you probably know it by now!

I dont know about the 80s but they had rap before Puff Daddy and Nelly defintely.......there was Public Enemy and stuff....

MTV needs to kick the bucket with The Osbournes. It's getting old... the show's not even funny anymore. They also NEED (big emphasis on the 'need') to bring back Daria!

VH1....I like VH1. I like their countdown shows "100 blah blah blah of all time" and whatnot... also, I like thier "I Love the 80's!"

BET.....I hate that channel. Cause I don't like Rap or R&B or Hip-Hop

Oh, I agree with you about The Osbournes. I say bring back Daria and Beavis and Butthead

BET- Never watched the station, so can't voice an opinion about it.

MTV- It def. sucks, imo.

VH1- Well, def. better than MTV.

CMT- It's kind of playing the same stuff over and over and over again. They used to show a lot of variety, it seems like for the past week they play that new Johnny Cash song right at 2:55 in the morning before the paid program kicks in. Bring back the variety to the station and it'll be good again.

Daria and the Osbournes were the two reasons I'd watch MTV. I wish Beavis and Butthead would come back because I never really got a chance to see any of the shows, but I loved the movie.

I hate BET. I hate rap and hip hop and all that other stuff on there.

That's your opinion, many other viewers disagree. MTV is currently reaching the highest ratings it had ever had. IMO, MTV greatly improved in 2002.

The comment about "The Osbournes" was very close-minded. "The Real World," and "Road Rules" are interesting, and fun to watch. It captures the lives of people our same generation dealing with the same issues we do. MTV airs shows like, "Jackass," "Punk'd," "True Life, "Sorority/Fraternity Life," etc. because they know it would appeal to a young audience.

Quote:

The creators didn't want to go on with the show anymore- or asked for too much money.

The show Cindy hosted is called "House of Style"- famous model, Molly Sims is the current host.

They also had talk, and game shows.

"Pop-Up Video" is a VH-1 original, why should MTV take their credit?

That always puzzled me too, but last time I heard they were trying to raise ratings. Last year they were at an all-time low.

Actually when BET first debuted (according to siblings) it didn't have such a main focus on music, but they did air music vids., once in awhile. They mostly aired shows dealing with Black culture. During the '90s they changed their focus to music.

We've got a helluvalotta music channels in the Uk and most of 'em are utter crap!

MTV - never watch it - rubbish.
MTV Hits - I'll put it on the morning as background music when I'm getting ready for work. I remember when it used to be called 'MTV Extra' - it was good back then. It's too 'poppy' now.
VH1 - never watch it.
VH1 Classic - never watch it either. The songs they have on there are not 'classics' IMO. It's a waste of time.
MTV2 - it used to be good years ago when it was called 'M2'. It played a decent selection of vids both mainstream and not so well-known. It's too commercial now and there's too much chat between the vids.
MTV Base - I'm not really into R&B and rap so I don't watch this channel.
MTV Dance - I like the 'I Got Mashed In.....' shows. I'll put this on if I'm the mood for a bit of a party.
TMF - Too 'poppy. One of those 'phone in at 75p a minute and request a video' deals. I switch over occasionally to see who's on but I don't sit and watch it.
The Box - same as above.
Kiss - same as above.
Smash Hits - same as above.
Magic - same as above but worse!
Q - same as above. Used to be good but sold out - now there's too much pop and R&B on the playlist.
Kerrang - same deal as Q - used to really rock but sold out. Avril has no place on a so-called 'rock channel'.
Chart Show TV - crap!
The Hits - crap!
P-Rock TV - really, really cool! Loads of punk and rock bands and no comercials between the vids. I've gotten into so many cool bands thanks to P-Rock TV - Whitmore, Finch, Violent Delight, Pennywise, Rancid..........the list goes on.
Channel U - mainly R&B and Urban music with a few random pop records thrown in for no good reason. Pretty crap.

^I think in the U.S., we have:

MTV
MTV | 2
MTV Español
VH-1
VH-1 Classic
VH-1 Soul
BET
CMT
GAC
Much Music

But, I think that MTV, VH-1, and BET more "affiliates" than the ones I listed.

MTV is just as bad as the rest. Most music channels in the US suck. The point of being a music channel is to mostly play music, not reality TV.

MTV - Never watch it.
VH1 - Behind the Music and their "Top 100 of All Time" countdowns can be pretty good.
BET - If I'm bored, I watch their videos. I heard they used to show black sitcoms on there; they should do that again because they showed a few I wanted to see.
CMT - I can only stand, like, 5 country songs, and they never play those. So no.

I have Bet Jazz (as well as MTV Hits which is nothing but music videos believe or not) and all it is is a black guy with a trombone from 24 hours.Seriously.I got BET last year for the sitcoms like "Sparks" and "Goode Behavior" but with my luck they were gone and now there's crappy rap in it's place .
