Default Mambo Kings

I got stuck watching this movie again in Latino Lit. Woopie. I really don't like it, and Desi Jr.'s accent drives me crazy, but boy he looks like his dad.

I thought he could have added a little in the charisma department, hey Bubbles, you have Joyride? It's playing this morning and i'm taping it, from 1977, Desi Jr and Robert Carradine, to think his mother played with Robert's dad on a Lucy ep.

Nope, don't have that one. I'm sure I saw it was on, but my memory doesn't let me remember to tape anything.

Whoever did research for The Mambo Kings failed. They show the beginning of a ILL episode on there, and they use the syndicated opening. These people were watching it in 1952! DUH!

Darlin, none of it makes sense, they did not do variety on that show either, but it was nice that they used the show that way, and the recreation of the era and all was fantastic, should be seen by every Lucy fan. It was a good film, well acted, and the intercutting of scenes from the show was very well done.

That's true. The whole plot really skips all over the place. They tried to shove too much in too little space. But Lucy fans would all find that aspect of the movie interesting anyway.

You always say it perfectly, you and Jane and Mickey and Old shows and Buddy Love and a few others are the main reason i keep coming back here, i LOVE the new people too. Mambo Kings is a so so film, but the Lucy aspect of it makes up for it for us fans. Love that song too, should have been nominated for an Oscar. Can you believe Antonio Banderas did the whole film phonetically, not speaking a word of English at the time, at all!

We talked about that song in class today. I said it signified everything that had been lost in the film, lives, loves, identities, etc. Must have been a smart comment because the teacher ran with it for several minutes.

And yeah, Antonio did great with the language. It sure made his character seem authentic.

Even his annoying accent reminded me of Ricky Ricardo. To think that he didn't even know what he was saying at the time is beyond me, and yes that song was GREAT! Possibly the best thing about the movie. Another case of the Academy awards getting it wrong.

The Academy gets EVERYTHING wrong. Well, almost everything.

Well, they never gave one to Lucy for starters, even one for her charitable work would have been nice.

Probably because:

A) People actually saw her films.

and...

B) They weren't overhyped.

I swear those are the only ones that ever get nominated. Rarely seen or overhyped.
