This question might get a little confusing, but stick with me...
The show portrayed Blanche as a widow. But I never understood why it did that. Judging by the staggering amount of men that she dated (and got sick of) over the course of the show, wouldn't it have made more sense to portray her as a divorced woman? It might have fit her character better, like...she gets tired of George and divorces him, then has a lot of ill-fated relationships with other men like the one she had with George. Does that make sense to anyone? |

Good point! The way Blanche goes through men, it makes it hard to believe that she ever stayed faithful to George until the day he died

I was having a conversation with my brother who had never seen the show before and he asked why they were all single. I said 3 were widowed and 1 was divorced and he thought Blanche was the one that was divorced. So I guess it does make sense.

I agree.
Another point to consider is that although Blanche said she was never tempted to cheat on George, he did cheat on her. He had a son, David. |

I think the point of that situation was supposed to be that George was Blanche's soul mate and one true love. She loved him so much that, despite her man-crazy nature, she never had the need to look elsewhere while he was alive. She did almost marry a couple of times after his death, but I doubt the writers ever would have actually seen her walk down the aisle. I picture the writers thinking it would be more satisfying for viewers to see Dorothy be the one to remarry, since she had suffered the pain of adultery, and had been made to feel undesirable by her housemates for seven long years. Turns out, Blanche's Uncle Lucas found her plenty attractive, and Dorothy ended up with a very handsome hubby.

Especially Big Daddy, that is such a slap in the face to "Big Mommy" since it went on for decades. |

Well it was Dorothy who had to be the butt of rejection jokes because she was divorced, not Blanche. Didn't one of the earliest episodes revolve around Blanche about to marry a bigamist, which might not have been as strong a storyline had she been introduced as a divorcee already?
