Lonely In Las Vegas
Freddie Prinze sat in his dressing room at Ceasers Palace. He should've been the happiest man in the world for he was the star on a top tv sitcom CHICO & THE MAN, a successful comic who sold out comedy clubs, theatres & places like Ceasers Palace, was married to a lovely wife Kathy & had a beautiful baby named Freddie Jr. But here he sat 45 minutes prior to his opening show time, crying, sniffling, clutching a folded handkerchief as he stared at the papers on the table before him. Divorce papers from his wife Kathy. Papers that gave him no rights to his son & stated he could never see his son again. Why, why he thought. He had loved Kathy & had given her everything she ever wanted. They had a good marriage & a beautiful baby but she wanted a divorce. & Freddie felt she didn't even love him anymore. Nobody cares he thought as he reached up & dabbed at his eyes with his hanky for what seemed like the hundredth time. He was the sweetest & most loving man in the world. No one sweeter could you ever met But he had a problem & one he could not beat... He was startled from his tearful reverie by a knock on his dressing room door. Hey Freddie open up, It's me Brenner a voice said which he instantly recognized as that of his good friend & fellow comic David Brenner. Yeah, Hold on a minute Freddie replied. I gotta finish dressing he lied, trying to give him a few moments to regain his composure. He reached up & wiped out his eyes with his hanky, plastered on a fake smile for what was getting to be his habit these days in order to cover his sadness & went to answer the door. Bout time you answered Brenner said. I wanted to congratulate you on your show tonite he added taking a can of whipped cream he was holding behind his back & squirting Freddie with it. Gotcha, he added! Hey watch the suit Freddie yelled pretending to be mad! I gotta go on in 45 minutes. Freddie took his handkerchief & started wiping the whipped cream from his suit with it. Oops, sorry bout that Brenner said, didn't mean to get your suit messed up. Really you need a cherry to go on top that Brenner added with a grin. He spotted a box of Kleenex sitting on the dressing room table left there for the stars to use to put on makeup or whatever & grabbed some Kleenex taking them & helping wipe the whipped cream off of Freddie. Geeze, almost ruined my suit Freddie muttered. New suit Brenner asked. Naw, Freddie replied old suit straightening his tie. I got so many bills to pay this month can't afford new suits right now. Brenner replied, well I think the whipped cream goes well with your tie & hanky set you are wearing with your suit. Really Freddie said? Your kidding, He laughed. Say amigo Freddie continued, I need to run my new routine by you okay he said, noticing that the can of whipped cream was now sitting unnoticed on the table. Sure, Run it by me Brenner said. Okay, how about this Freddie said taking the can of whipped cream & squirting it all over Brenners face. Whipped cream was all over Brenners face & part of the pullover sweater he was wearing. You bleep you Brenner said pretending to be mad but laughing. You got me good he added. & You deserved it Amigo Freddie replied. Brenner noticed Freddie looked as if he'd been crying but was trying to hide it & noticed the folded hanky he was holding in his hand. Is something wrong he asked Freddie. Why do you ask Freddie replied? You looked like you'd been crying, your eyes are all swollen & red & you're holding a handkerchief in your hand, Brenner stated. & it looks pretty well used he added. No, I haven't been crying it's my allergies, Freddie lied. Cut the crap Freddie, I know you better than that & it's not an allergy attack Brenner replied. Well, you know my allergies have been bothering me worse since I came up here from LA Freddie said. Yeah right Brenner said, Look if somethings wrong maybe I can help. There is nothing you can do Freddie replied unless you can get my wife to come back to me, the tears welling in Freddies eyes again. Oh no what's wrong Brenner asked? My wife is divorcing me & she won't let me see the baby anymore. My little pie I can no longer see anymore Freddie said starting to cry softly. I'm so sorry Brenner said, I had no idea. I thought you two were happy. I thought so too hermano, Freddie said but I don't think she loves me. I mean why would she divorce me if she loved me. Why would she hurt me so. Brenner could see the tears & hurt in Freddies eyes & felt sorry for him. Freddie dabbed at his eyes with his hanky again. Man I am so sorry Brenner breathed. I really am. Maybe you can talk her in getting back together with you he asked? No it won't work, she told me she wants me out of her life-- forever Freddie replied the tears puddling under his eyes. You can always get another girl you know Brenner said, there are lots of girls who'd love to date you he added. No David they don't want me, they want Chico Freddie said. & Nobody laughs at my shows anymore. My routines just aren't funny anymore he added. Don't say that Brenner said, you are the funniest guy I know. Yeah & so's Don Rickles but that don't get you laughs Freddie retorted.. No seriously you got a good thing going & you're funny Brenner said. Why don't you come & check out my show during your break? It might get your mind of things & do you some good to relax & see the show, he added. Sure I guess so Freddie said sniffling & dabbing at his eyes with his hanky again. Brenner picked up the Kleenex box & offered it to Freddie. Kleenex he queried? Thanks but I already got a snot rag Freddie replied wiping the end of his nose with his hanky. The way I've been crying this week, I think all that's in my laundry anymore, indicating his hanky. Never hurts to have extras Brenner stated. Freddie reached in the box & pulled out a handful of Kleenex & stuck them in his suit coat pocket. Plenty of snot rags now Freddie murmured. Look I gotta run & get ready for my gig Brenner said but you stop by & check out my show, I'll be looking for ya he added smiling at Freddie. Yeah, Freddie replied managing a weak smile, I gotta get ready to go on stage myself he said. Brenner left & Freddie took his hanky opening it up & dried his tears & face with it, then gently blew his nose, refolded the hanky & stuck it back in his pants pocket. He walked over to the attached restroom & went to the sink to splash water on his face. Poor guy Brenner thought as he left. It must be rough going thru a divorce like that. But he'll survive. He's a survivor... |

Chuck Hoffa his valet came into the room. Are you ready yet? Do you need anything he asked Freddie. No amigo came the reply as Freddie took a long drag of a cigarette. I am fine. I have to run over my routine again. Sure, good luck with the show Chuck said leaving & having no idea how upset Freddie was. Freddie walked out on stage to thunderous applause but he couldn't hear it. All he could hear in his mind was his routine & worrying about getting it right. The audience laughed but Freddie never heard it. They're not laughing he thought panicking inside. Why am I not funny he thought? I am a funny man...
During the break between both his shows he ambled across the street to check out Brenners show., Brenner saw Freddie coming in & immediately mentioned it in his show. Hey there my good friend Freddie Prinze. You know Chico from Chico & the Man. I know why he's here tonite. He wanted to steal some more of my jokes. Ya know he takes my jokes, steals them & tells them in his show. The prices of his shows are much more inflated than mine. So remember folks if you come to see me you can hear the same jokes for cheaper & from the guy who originally did them. Why pay more for jokes that aren't as funny as mine he added laughing. Actually Freddies a good guy but then again so are all my comedian friends. Never met a comedian I didn't like he added. Freddie shook his head sadly not getting the joke, not finding it funny & left to go back & get ready for his 2nd show. Aww, don't leave Freddie Brenner said. I thought you were having a good time, I guess you gotta go do your show. I'll be back later to steal some your jokes. It's only fair since you take mine he added jokingly. Freddie was lost in his reverie of being hurt over Kathy & the loss of the bay & non one finding his joke funny he perceived. Show 2 came & went with folks laughing & Freddie never hearing it. Afterwards Brenner came back to congratulate him. You were great he told Freddie. Yeah & I didn't quite appreciate your little joke there Freddie stated. Ya know I was only kidding Brenner said. Yeah, Freddie replied sure. He weakly laughed. Look how about we get together for dinner tomorrow nite before our shows Brenner asked. Sure Freddie replied, got nothing better to do. Great Brenner replied, I'll call ya tomorrow afternoon. They parted in the nite with Freddie heading thru the casinos lobby to go back to his room. As Freddie walked by a blonde busty bimbo type chick was playing blackjack at a table. She spotted Freddie & recognized him. Hey Chico why don't ya come over & play some blackjack. We could have a great time, she said. No way, don't you know gambling is zee devils tool, Freddie replied. No, but I could use a little help from a sexy guy like you she replied. Sorry Mami but I must be getting back to my suite. I have better things to do than participate in the evil sins of Las Vegas Freddie said grinning at her with his trademark grin. Adios he added. She smiled at him & said Honey if you ever decide you want to participate in the sin of gambling as you call it, just call me Shirley at 555- 5555. I'll be waiting. Freddie laughed & shrugged his shoulders walking in the direction of the elevator to go to his suite. Freddie opened the door to his suite went inside & plopped down on the couch, loosening his tie slightly & taking out a cigarette & lighting it & taking a drag off it. In a moment he would be making a call, a call that would probably break his heart but he had to try & convince her somehow that he deserved to be with his son. When he had finished the cigarette, he walked over to the rotary phone & carefully dialed the number. Hola, Kathy This is Freddie he said. He asked her how she & the baby was & she replied they were both fine. I got the rough draft of the papers today you know he said choking on his words. Look Mami, please don't leave me, please don't hurt me like this Senora. Please let me see my baby. No! She replied her words sharply hurting the handsome Puertorican. Please Mami. Freddie said starting to cry. She told him no & he burst into tears sobbing over the phone. She accused Freddie of pretending to cry to get his way. No Mami I am not faking it, my tears are for real Freddie said, hurt that she didn't realize his tears were for real. Please let me talk to my son he plead. He was boo-hooing over the phone. No she replied. You're a user & I won't have my son around users she said sharply. Freddie wept but she ignored his cries insisting he needed to grow up & be a man for once instead of crying to get his way. He tried to explain to her his crying was for real but she didn't believe him. She finally hung up on him leaving Freddie sobbing on the phone. Freddie was hurt & more than she could ever know. There was one more phone call to make but first he needed to regain his composure. He sat down on the chair next to the phone & cried like a baby for several minutes sobbing his heart out. When he had finished, he took his hanky & dried his tears with it, then carefully blew his nose. When he was finished he folded up the soft linen cloth & holding it tightly in his hand made the next call. Hello? Ma? Freddie asked. He said hi to his Ma asking her how she & his Pa were doing. He told her he missed her & then started to cry. Maria knew something was wrong with her son & it troubled her. Freddie told her about the draft of the divorce papers he had gotten & how Kathy would no longer let him see little Pie & about his call to her. He wept uncontrollably on the phone as he spoke heartbroken over the impending divorce & not being able to see his baby son. Maria tried to comfort him but he couldn't be comforted. Don't cry Freddie she said, Maybe she will come back to you. No it's over Freddie sobbed & I have lost my son. Why don't you come home for Christmas instead of working in Vegas she suggested, we miss you. There is no need to come home Freddie replied when my own wife does not want me & will not let me see my son. I already had Christmas with my son before I left for Vegas. Plus I cannot break my prior commitments. I know, Maria said but we miss you very much & would love to see you. Freddie suggested she come to Vegas for Christmas. She told him they really couldn't but maybe they could come for New Yrs. Freddie seemed pleased about that. He told her how happy that would make him, sniffling as he talked into the phone. She tried to comfort Freddie but it was to no avail. Freddie wept again as he told his mother goodbye over the phone. She felt troubled as she hung up the phone but knowing Freddie she thought, he'd find love again. She hoped. It broke her heart to see her son so sad. |

Freddie took his hanky & dried his tears with it then shoved it back into his pants pocket. He walked into the bedroom & changed into a t-shirt that said Las Vegas on it & a pair of karate pants. He walked into the bathroom, pulled out a bottle of pills & took out several taking them & washing them down with half a bottle of wine. He sat on the bed & attempted to watch the late late show for awhile then changed into green silk pajamas. He looked handsome despite his somewhat haggard appearance. He sat down on the bed & reached onto the nitestand table & picked up his Bible well worn from much use. He read some passages from the Psalms hoping that would quiet his heart & mind. The Bible was such a comfort to him & no matter what state of mind he was in he tried to make it his daily habit to read from the good book. Next he prayed tearfully pleading with God to give him his wife & baby back. He laid on the bed & attempted to sleep. Ending up crying himself to sleep. Sweet tormented sleep that was restless throughout the nite & next day. He awoke at noon to find his pillow damp with tears & several crumpled damp tearstained Kleenexes in the bed. All I do anymore is cry myself to sleep anymore he thought. Putting on a bathrobe he ordered room service. Toast & eggs were all he could handle. He turned on the tv & settled in for watching a re-run of the Mike Douglas show. He was the guest star & he chuckled in amusement at how he looked in the dark suit he had worn & the jokes he told. Man I was funny back then he thought but why not anymore, he mused. When the program ended he went & got dressed putting on a tan leisure suit. He went to the bathroom to take some more pills & discovered the bottle was empty. No this can't be he thought, I HAVE to have those pills. He went to the phone & made a call to Dr Kogers office. The friendly receptionist told him the good dr was out of town for a few days. Freddie insisted he had to have the prescription phoned in as he was out. She was sorry but not much she could do. Freddie panicked, panic & terror setting in. He had to have those pills, he had to. He reaching in his wallet & pulled out a business card. It belonged to the drug dealer he got his pills form when the dr couldn't get them for him. Maybe this guy would know someone in the area who he could buy them from. He knew a reputable dr wouldn't prescribe them to him. The dealer gave him a number of someone in Vegas to call. Freddie called the number & made arraignments to meet the guy in an alley. He met the guy a gruff mafia looking type who took no gruff from anyone. The guy quoted prices that were higher than what Freddie paid in LA. Freddie insisted that wasn't what he paid in LA for the pills. They guy said, This is Vegas you either pay the Vegas prices or you don't get the pills. He looked threatening & mean. Freddie gave him the money. The man thanked him for his business & gave him a business card & the 2 parted as though criminals engaged in an illegal act. Which it probably was. Freddie felt so guilty about what he had just done getting pills from a drug dealer. He really felt like such a user. A user was what Kathy called him. She had practically screamed it at him one nite in a fit of rage. But I can't be a user he thought. You get these drugs legally from a dr. He thought about Kathy how she had suggested he got to the dr in the first place & then when he started taking the pills she told him he was nothing but a drug user no better than a heroin addict. The thought made him cringe & he remembered her berating him & the sting of her words. Maybe she's right he thought, maybe I am a user. No she is the user he thought. She married me, used my love & made me treat her like a queen & now she dumps me. He knew his problem was the pills & he was hooked but he could never bring himself to admit it. He was sure of one thing. His problem was a wife who no longer loved him & was heck bent on hurting him anyway she could...
He quickly walked back to his hotel using a route where he wouldn't be easily noticed for he wanted no one to know of his dealings of the day. He went back to his room & sat on the couch relaxing. He later went & took 4 pills from the bottle chasing them down with a jigger of wine. The buzz was starting to kick in. After awhile he got out his gun & toyed with it. He held it to his temple pretending to squeeze the trigger. One click & he would be free of the pain that plagued him. No more sorrow in his life. But he didn't have the guts to do it just then. He thought of his dear mother & sweet baby he would leave behind. He just couldn't do it. Then maybe again I could he thought. No, I have a show to do tonight he sighed not wanting to shirk his responsibility. His thoughts were interrupted by a knock on the door. It was his secretary Carol Novak announcing she had his fan mail & other mail for him. He took the gun & fired it into the air & then slumped over onto the ground. Carol came into the room & upon seeing Freddies lifeless body screamed. Suddenly Freddie got up & spoke. Hola Mami! Hola my beep she replied with a shriek. Do you realize you scared the wits outta me how dare you do that Freddie Prinze she said. Freddie apologized telling her it was all a joke. Well some joke that is Carol said you scared the life out of me. Freddie begged her forgiveness & gave her a quick peck on the cheek. She shot him a disapproving glance & told him because she cared was why she was so upset with him over the incident. Freddie said it was an innocent joke. Carol wished he wouldn't joke like that. But it was getting to be more habit than not & she sighed as she watched the handsome Puertorican open up his mail. Freddie grinned at delight at some of the fan mail. They talked business for 45 minutes as he went thru his mail & then she had to leave. After she left Freddie sat going thru more fan mail happy that there were some folks that cared but he sighed realizing they were all 16 yr. old girls. Ah to be 16 again he thought. After 30 minutes the phone rang. It was Brenner announcing lets go get dinner. Sure Freddie replied. He took the elevator & headed to the restaurant where he met Brenner for dinner. Brenner greeted him warmly & Freddie patted him affectionately back on the back. Did you hear Tony Orlando was in town, Brenner asked. No Freddie replied. I haven't heard from him in 3 months he added. Long time no see huh? Brenner added as Freddie looked on distracted by his thoughts as to why his friend hadn't called in 3 months. He tried to mask the sadness he felt at his friend not being in touch. It just wasn't like Tony, his Amigo, his Chicano brother... |
