Thumbs up Any Prog-Rock Fans?

I noticed the Rush poll here & figured I'd ask. (btw, *my* fave Rush album was in "other"; neck & neck w/ Hemispheres & A Farewell to Kings.

Anyway, I'm also heavy into Yes, Kansas (those unfamiliar *must* hear their work before 'Carry On Wayward Son"!), Genesis (Peter Gabriel years!), Tull, Mike Oldfield, lots of Pink Floyd, ELP, sort of into King Crimson, Trace & Gentle Giant and I'm just discovering Spock's Beard. Still lots more I'd love to hear.

Sure, I like some of the music from that era. Unfortunatly, a band like Kansas will forever be lumped into the "classic rock" category, and "Carry On My Wayward Son" will be the only song of thiers you'll hear on "classic rock" stations. Since you live in NYC, you probably listen to Q104, and know what I'm talking about.
I wish we could get back to the days of Album Oriented rock, where a listener could hear some tunes other than the standard "greatest hits" from these great classic bands.

Yeah, Q104 is what I hear, but like 99% of classic rock stations out there, they don't do the bands & artists justice by playing the same 10 songs. If a young newbie listened to these stations, they'd think David Bowie wrote 3 songs. Anyway, that's why I don't listen to the radio for very long when I *do* listen.

Cool re: prog rock

Other than Rush, I like Yes, Pink Floyd, Kansas, Queensryche, Dream Theater, and even Jethro Tull.

I know a girl who likes Kansas, but I havent ever gotten into it. I might like it if I ever took the time to listen.

Good question. I think he had prog tendencies in his sound, but on the other hand, I only know his hits. I'll head over to a good prog-rock website I know & post that question for opinions...

Ok, seems the general consensus is no. Closer to pop. But his former band Spooky Tooth was "proto-prog" w/ the heavy organs etc.

Cool re: prog-rock

I've heard of the band Voivod, a progressive thrash-metal band.
They have some cool ideas in their music, but I haven't heard them for a while...

I really like Voivod. 1st got into em a little over 10 years ago after I kept hearing they were "the next Rush". But I was sold after one album they did called "Angel Rat" was produced by Rush's longtime producer Terry Brown. Great album. Then I went on to "The Outer Limits". Another good album. But I was told I *have* to hear "Nothingface", so that's my next hit.

They've been kinda quiet more recently, BUT I hear that former Metallica bassist Jason Newstead is either joining them or will just be playing on the next album. Major step ahead for Voivod. I'm curious to hear it!
