Default Show inconsistencies

Wow! WHat happened to the board? Where did everyone go?

Anyway, as I've been watching shows from the first season, I noticed that there are some inconsistencies with the characters' "stories" as time went by. Here are some I can think of:

Fish said he had a granddaughter who attended Hunter College (grandchildren were never brought up ever again).

Fish said his daughter got married when she was 27. Unless she got divorced or something, subsequently they made it look like Beverly was single (Dietrich even hit on her!). In the "Hash" episode, he tells an officer that Bernice is his woman, and mother to his daughter, implying that Beverly was an only child.

In one of the earlier episodes, it was mentioned that Fish had been in the Police Force for 30 years. When he retired, 2 years later, he had 38 years.

In the first episode, Harris was a Detective First Grade. By the tenth episode, he was a Sergeant.

Dietrich was either born in 1943, or 1947. By the way, he would have been in the Police Force 30 years this year (2003)!

Dietrich said one time that he had never been married, but later told Harris that he was divorced.

The show was very consistent story-wise though, and sometimes it would follow-up on things that had been brought up years before.

Any more?

I can't think of any inconsistencies. I tried though. I did notice the boxing poster hanging in Chano's apartment in the episodes where he kills the bank robbers.
I'm wondering if this is the one that ends up hanging in the Precinct hallway, if it wasn't already there. It looks identical.

How the boys send out for lunch changes. In one early ep the deli owner comes to the 12th Precinct and brings them their lunch. In another early ep a uniformed cop (not Levitt) goes to the deli and gets them their lunch.

your 4th inconsistancy can be explained because shows sometimes change little things when they first start. For instance, in the pilot for "Barney Miller" his wife was played by someone else.
Also, the show was originnaly going to focus on both his home life, and work life.

Default Inconsistencies

Here's one that bothers me, even as a loyal Barney fan since the 70's. The idea of the property room comes up in the episode where a doll gets stolen, only it's supposed to be upstairs. How does this gibe with the episode where the roof is about to collapse with five feet of water...right above them? Please, let's discuss this.

In Luger's first appearance he says that Foster died from multiple strokes and Kliner died of pneumonia, but later on we are repeatedly told that Foster was shot in the line of duty and Kliner was blown up in his car.

These kinds of facts are illuminating and truly add another dimension to revisiting and enjoying the shows. And only a true fan knows these things. I know with the Adv. of Ozzie and Harriet I'm very aware of character changes and character inconsistencies. And I know on I Love Lucy bd, MadameX and Ireneparalegal have amazing level of details ab out each ep that really enhance my viewing. It's great to see threads like this. Thanks for starting this one.

Yes, Barney Miller had its share of inconsistencies, but it was nowhere as bad in that department as Good Times.

Default Show Inconsistencies

The Odd Couple was another show known for its inconsistencies.

I always enjoyed the storylines and characters on Barney Miller so I never minded.
