Buena Vista TV has kicked off a bidding war for off-network rerun rights to the hit ABC sitcom "My Wife & Kids," and Tribune stations won the auction over Fox stations in the first five markets to close on the deal.
KTLA Los Angeles, WPIX New York, WGN Chicago, KBDC Washington and KHWB Houston -- all owned by Tribune Broadcasting -- have won exclusive rights to "My Wife & Kids" in their markets for the first three years of a contract that could run beyond five years, depending on how long ABC keeps renewing it. The stations can start playing the series five times a week in the fall of 2005. Buena Vista has retained the right to sell the sitcom to a cable network in year four, setting up a shared window with TV syndication. Two cable networks that have already expressed an interest in "My Wife & Kids" are TBS, which runs a successful rerun-comedy block every weekday from 1 to 8 p.m., and Buena Vista's sister network, ABC Family. Since hit reality series are cutting into the number of half-hour comedies on the broadcast networks' prime-time schedules, TV stations are beginning to worry that the pipeline for sitcom reruns could run dry. That fear could drive up the price of "My Wife & Kids" to an eventual license fee exceeding $2 million an episode in off-network syndication. The show could also deliver an additional high eight-figure number from a combination of license fees from the eventual cable-network deal and the value of the national advertising time in each episode. "My Wife & Kids," from Touchstone TV, stars Damon Wayans and Tisha Campbell as the parents of three obstreperous kids. Wayans also is a co-executive producer. |

Just an update, 25 markets have already bought it, including 15 of the top 20 markets. So 45% of the country is cleared. This is great news, it premieres in syndication in fall 2005. Touchstone is also selling Scrubs for off-network syndication Fall '05 or '06, According to Jim for Fall '06, and 8 Simple Rules for Fall '07. Those three are still just underway, they first need to clear 4 seasons on the air.

ABC Family has picked up the cable rights to co-owned Buena Vista Television's My Wife and Kids, where it will air starting in 2008. License fees for the show are around $315,000 per episode, which could total nearly $52 million. My Wife and Kids premiered on ABC in 2001 and goes into national syndication in fall 2005, where, so far, Buena Vista has cleared it in 75% of the country. By the time ABC Family can air the show in 2008, at least 154 episodes will have been produced, with 22 shows typically comprising a full-season order. ABC Family's contract allows it to purchase up to 165 episodes of the half-hour show. |

This is good news for My Wife and Kids. It's a shame that there are very few sitcoms on television good enough for syndication. I think that The King of Queens is the best sitcom on television right now that will be coming to syndication. Hopefully there will be other good sitcoms from all three main networks this fall. ABC's TGIF Block this fall seems solid.. I'm looking forward to Kelly Ripa and Faith Ford in "Hope & Faith," and I've always liked Bonnie Hunt and enjoyed her show "Life with Bonnie," which will follow "Hope" at 9:30pm eastern.
