Number 3?!?! EXCUSE ME?! Who in the hell do these idiots think they are?! I love Black Sabbath and everything, but Jesus Mary and Joseph, Appetite For Destruction should have been number one. And Mr. Brownstone is the worst track on that album, and it's still excellent!

Is Thin Lizzie considered a "metal band?"

I don't think AC/DC is "metal" either, but it's a good list.

Kudos to them for mentioning Motorhead. Lemmy rules!

I don't get it either, but I guess for them to put the Paranoid album at #1 makes sense because it's the album that pretty much INVENTED classic metal in 1970. Yeah, G N' R should've been higher. I don't know who the hell compiled these lists. Guitar World editor Brad Tolinsky says that Back in Black by AC/DC should've been on there as well. Btw, the songs I put on there WEREN'T necessarily listed in the article, these were songs that WERE either mentioned or ones that were popular, or my own favorites, etc., in other words, ones that gave an idea what the album/band was noted for. I personally think "Mr. Brownstone" was a really cool song, maybe I should actually BUY
that album and get a better idea!!!

You know, I remember hearing the album some time ago on the radio and thought it was great --BUT I DON'T REMEMBER ALL THE SONGS ON THE ALBUM!!!! Gee, what sort of Beatles fan am I...They only listed one song on the album in the article, and the others I had to quote from memory...

I guess back in the 70's when the charts were glutted with disco and radio-friendly pop, they WERE considered metal. Funny how a lot of bands were--including Styx and Foreigner...

AC/DC will tell you right off they are NOT a metal band, they get very offended by that term. Angus Young gets this idea of men in armor when he thinks of it...

It's strange, I remember watching this history of Headbangers' Ball on MTV year ago or so, and back in the early 90's they had a problem with not knowing what to do with bands like Soundgarden and some of them who didn't fit the traditional definition of heavy metal--"should we put them on the show?"
This broadening of heavy metal and hard rock was one of the reasons why they cancelled the show...

Btw, Ozzy and Black Sabbath, Rush, KISS, etc. have never considered themselves heavy metal either. Ozzy says that when he thinks of heavy metal, he thinks of "a moose taking a dump in the woods..."

Speaking of Motorhead, they don't think of themselves as the "godfathers of thrash." I saw them open for (what then passed for) Black Sabbath in 1995 and not only were they very LOUD, but there seemed to be something very traditional in their music. They did ROCK, tho'...
Lemmy is such a bad-ass, he's great!!!

Yesssss.....buy the album. And "Back In Black" should have been on there. I was suprised it wasn't. I mean "Shook Me All Night Long" was what, one of the most popular songs in the 80's?
