Will Gil Bellows be '1st to Die'?

February 20, 2003
A serial killer is murdering brides and grooms in "James Patterson's 1st to Die." Crack detective Lindsay Boxer (TRACIE POLLAN) and Chris Raleigh (GIL BELLOWS) are assigned to the case. The surprise here is Chris is not Lindsday's regular partner, but a police captain in the public relations department she met and bedded the night before.

Before the two solve the crime spree -- mind you they don't do it on their own -- and resolve their sexual encounter, there are a plethora of twists and turns to the NBC thriller, airing Sunday, Feb. 23 from 8-11 p.m.

"I'm an anchor in this crazy story, and I like that idea," says the former "Ally McBeal" star, who was sporting a MATT LAUER-short haircut the day ET spoke with him. "I just thought it would be fun. It's a story where you don't know what happens until the very end. It's nice to be involved in a thriller that is effective, creates suspense and ultimately tricks you."

In addition to Pollan and Bellows, the cast of the film, developed from the JAMES PATTERSON eponymous novel, includes PAM GRIER, ROBERT PATRICK, SEAN YOUNG, CARLY POPE, ANGIE EVERHART, MITCH PILEGGI and MEGAN GALLAGHER.

"James is very talented in what he does because he gives you all the elements that you demand from a thriller, and at the same time, he is a very intelligent person, so he fills you with ideas, information and points of view that you wouldn't be exposed to otherwise," Bellows adds.

Despite Bellows' star billing, the three-hour movie event is more of a tour de force for the women, who form an unofficial "Women's Murder Club" to solve the case by exchanging information. The club is comprised of Lindsay, representing the police department; the chief medical examiner (Greer); the assistant district attorney (Gallagher) and an ambitious young newspaper reporter (Pope).

That said, the bulk of this movie falls on the shoulders of Pollen, who has spent the past few years going back and forth between working and taking large periods of time off to take care of her children and her husband (MICHAEL J. FOX). But in itself, not carrying the project was part of the appeal to Bellows.

"First of all, I am a fan of James' writing," the Vancouver native and current resident explains of his reasons for signing on to the project. "Secondly, I liked the team that was being assembled. I liked where it was shooting. To be home shooting was a big bonus for me. And lastly, this wasn't on my shoulders. This was just a chance to just be there and lend a hand to a project that I thought was excellent."

Thanks Jenny. I've seen the ads for this movie, and it looks pretty good. A real who done it.
It will be nice to see Gil Bellows again. I miss the Ally cast.
