Although Fox's American Idol opened the night with a typically winning 13.1/18, CBS's competing JAG held up considerably well with a 10.5/15. Ditto for ABC's 8 Simple Rules (#3: 8.0/11), NBC special Most Outrageous Game Show Moments 3 (#4: 7.8/12) and the WB's always-dependable Gilmore Girls (5.3/ 7).

ABC's According to Jim dipped to a 6.6/ 9 at 8:30 p.m. (17 percent below lead-in 8 Simple Rules) while UPN's Buffy, the Vampire Slayer notched a could be better/could be worse 3.9/ 5. On Pax, a repeat of The Weakest Link averaged a 0.7/ 1.
