Question "Steinberg & Son" Episode

Ok, you remember the episode where Fred wants to sue the network for using his life & making a tv show of it. (wild to see John Laroquette!) Did anyone else notice during the stage scenes when the father & son spoke, the father's voice sounded dubbed? I *know* it was at one point. He slams his newspaper onto the couch while he was yelling & you don't hear it crinkle. I'm just curious why they dubbed some dialogue. A few lines of Grady's counterpart were dubbed too.

Anyway, this episode was 1975 & you could tell the writing staff was slowly running outta steam. Kind of a silly plot on this one. The one scene that made me laugh was when Rollo's cousin tells Fred that a Black version of the show wouldn't make it & Fred looks at the camera!

(as I keep saying, I think the best episodes were from '72 to about '74.)

I meant that in the Steinberg & Son Scene Max voice was dubbed when he said How could a boy who didnt graduate High School have such a College stupidity and When he says You hear that Naomi darling I should have waited till our son finished High School before I had my Heart Attack because you can tell the difference when he talks in the scenes with Fred and Lamont and their lawyer at MBC Gabbys lines were dubbed too

It was probably, dubbed because when the episode went into the editing stage of production, they found that the audio just wasn't loud enough, so they had the actors come in and say their lines again, and then dubbed over the scenes that needed to be. This has forever been done on sitcoms to ensure quality, since it would not be appropriate to totally retape a scene.

Actually, the reason I have read for the dubbing was the fact that the main characters (Fred, Lamont, Grady, Esther) were all miked so that their lines would be picked up and that the other characters were using overhead mikes and they weren't picked up as easily.

Then, they went back and overdubbed. In fact, I think the only live line that they used was when Aunt Ethel asked for her line and Esther stood up and said "Fish.....Eyed.....Fool!"
