Default sitcomsonline & freedom of speech

Other night reading some of the postings here, went under the "Alice" section, someone said something about Alice coming to WGN. Another person replied about posting false info and how that can get you banned from sitcomsonline.com . I read that has already happened to a few others, banned from posting false information.

My husband read this and considers the act of banning someone just be posting false information, may be a violation of free speech. Other woods, may be going too far. What exactly was said by these folks that got them "banned"? I assume these two didnt post their source. But then again how does one check it out? Meaning of course chcking out the "source" to see why what was being said, well ...being said.

I understand that , like other forums sitcomsonline needs rules.
I can see banning people who post things that would be considered slander, threating, or even dirty ( then again what really is the def. of dirty- my brother for example considers HBO's OZ and Six Feet Under "prono" though both shows are disscussed from time to time here ).

But to ban someone for false information, makes me wonder if the people in charge ever reads the many of TV trivia books out there? A LOT of them have information that often is wrong. Look at many of the Lucy books that came out over the years? I myself have three books in my collection that gave three different stories on Connie Hines ( Carol Post on Mr. ED ) and her opinions on MR. ED. Everything from "its a classic I am proud of " to " ...it was only a paycheck".

Though I dont own a copy, I have been told that both Barry Williams bio on the Brady Bunch and the book "Written out of Television" have so many errors that buying them would be a waste on money.

Sometimes the stars themselves give out the wrong info. Look at Tina Lousie and Jay North? Both stars over the years have fliped flopped their opinions of the shows that made them famous. Patty Duke is another one. I myself heard North years ago say how he was abused on the set while Joe kearnes ( the first Mr. Wilson ) actually hit him a few times, while on other shows he had nothing but praise and respect for the man. Makes me wonder what kind of mood medication North takes since he has said over the years he has an anger problem.

Then you have the radio. heard djs over the years say which shows is coming to TV Land, Hallmark, Nick@Nite, ect...and often they are wrong. Yesterday I myself heard on the radio last weeka story about the late Nell Carter and how "Gimmie A Break" may be coming to Nick@Nite sometime later this year. I believe it was on Washington's MIX 107.3 . Of course reading some of the posts here says otherwise.

Now if someone posted this under "Gimmie A Break" and if the info turns out to be false would he/she find themselves banned from sitcomsonline.com ? Shouldnt be punished by wrong information. Since almost 60% of things said on the radio are false ( and the fact that djs live/die by ratings many have been known to stretch the truth and be outrageous just so they can get the numbers ), makes me wonder if TV Land, and the other networks monitor what is said about them on radio. Then again since so little radio is taped ( when was the last time you taped a dj on the radio ) I guess even if you say something like "the man who played George Jefferson is gay" and even if Sherman Hemsley hears the broadcast chances are he wont be able to sue
unless of course he can get a tape of it , it would be his word vs. the dj's word.

Sorry if I went long on this but to ban someone only for posting wrong info ( unless of course its intended to hurt someone ), my husband and I feel , its a little much.

If you're knowingly posting wrong information just because you wish the show was on or just to get on other people's nerves, then you should be banned if you do it often enough. But if you honestly believe false information and didn't have any reason to doubt it, you shouldn't be banned. You can usually tell the difference between those people.

This site's privately run so moderators can ban whoever they please. ..Not that I agree with banning anyone for no apparent reason.

Free speach has nothing to do with it. If someone came into your livingroom and bothered you by talking too much or just being plum ugly, you can make them leave. That's life. The administrator of this board can ban anyone anytime that he wants. In the case of purposely posting false imformation, I would safely assume that he has asked the person not to do that after a prior false post. Then, when the person ignores the warning, he/she gets banned. That's fine by me. I prefer that the administrator of this site be attentive to false rumors rather than ignore them. I also don't like to see people take advantage of a good thing like this site to amuse themselves or further some agenda by speading lies. I appreciate the administator keeping an eye on that sort of 'National Enquier' type posting.

Yes, you'd have to do something really bad for someone to ban you here. I think that the moderators here are actually pretty lenient.

We aren't talking about a little misunderstanding. We're talking about lying and sometimes slandering someone. Banning someone is not like trying to kill someone either. It's just a way to keep civility on the boards. I don't think you can blame the administrator for not wanting people to purposely spread false rumors. Especially if he has warned them not to do that after a first or second offense.

I don't think sitcoms online and freedom of speech belong in the same sentence.

This is TJ's home and we're all guests. You have to treat this place with respect and follow the rules just like any other home. If you don't like it, go somewhere else. Nobody's forcing anybody to be here.
