You're so right, Jack. Ward and June get stiffer and stiffer the longer the series goes on. (And Jerry Mathers gets uglier and uglier.)
Last night ep is a classic example. Ward and June pratically have heart attacks after they find out that Wally may be going away to a friend's cabin WITHOUT PARENTAL SUPERVISION!! I know this is the early-60s -- generally speaking a much more civilized time than now -- but still, the school-marmish tone of late LITB is hard to take. |

I have a book about sitcoms, and the author addresses this a bit. He said that as the world in general changed, the LITB writers became even more conservative, almost like a counter-measure to what was going on in the real world.

And I don't think Jerry Mathers got ugly!!! I mean, he's not a cute little boy anymore, but everyone goes through that awkward stage. But look at his classmates. Compared to them, he looks pretty good!
