Where and when was the first meeting between Gilligan and the Skipper?

I know that Gilligan saved the Skipper's life, I'm not sure I remember when, but they were both in the navy, and that's what got the Skipper to hire him as first mate.

They (Skipper and Giligan) probably first met sometime in their Navy days, but they never actually talked about their actual first meeting.
