Question What is with Lamont's torn jacket?

I've noticed in many episodes that Lamont's jacket is torn or ripped or tattered to different varying degrees.

Why is this?

Is this to emphasize that the Sanford's are poor?

Within the same episode I noticed his torn jacket and then Fred all spiffed up in a suit. So what gives?

Surely Lamont can afford to have one decent jacket.

I don't think it's related to how poor they are or aren't. Even when Lamont isn't wearing that particular jacket, he looks kinda messy anyway (casual clothes, messy hair, etc.) I think it's more related to his character.

I noticed that jacket recently myself. It's the same tan, suede-looking one shown at the top of this board.

I also just assumed the tear was part of the character. Sorta emphasizing the "junk" aspect of the setting. And actually, I think they used at least one other duplicate. In some episodes, the rip isn't there.

I want that jacket! And funny enough, I'm in the midst of looking for a pair of "Lamont boots", as I call em! The cool, leather 70s style w/ the zippers on the sides he wore often. Hope they still make em. Guess this show had a bigger influence on me than I thought!

Default the jacket

i liked the way the jacket was used. to me it helped show reality to the show. we in the real world wear a lot of clothes or use things we have until we just have to replace them. to me, the jacket was used the same way. it was a good jacket until the tear go so big and really needed to be replaced. and eventually, it was.

DIDN'T HE RIP THAT JACKET FIGHTING JOE JACKSON IN THE EPISODE LAMONT GOES KARATE. WHEN HE COMES THROUGH THE DOOR YOU NOTICE THE RIP LIKE IT JUST HAPPENED. HE IS HOLDING A TISSUE TO HIS NOSE AND YOU NOTICE THE JACKET
