Default Two Questions about the ABP spinoff-Gloria

Does anyone know why the pilot for Gloria was never aired by CBS in 1982? Also why was the spinoff Gloria cancelled after it's first season and it finished #19 in the ratings?

Actually,it was a 2 part episode of Archie Bunker's Place where Gloria and Joey came home to visit and she had just gotten divorced from Mike and she was looking for a job to support her and Joey, the second part dealt with where she got the job as an assistant to the veteraniran(played by Burgess Meredith),and the pilot of Gloria was another episode of Archie Bunker's Place where Gloria and Joey moved into their new home.
Only reason why I think that they cancelled Gloria after 1 season because I think the producers couldn't figure out what to do with Gloria's character after divorcing Mike and trying to raise Joey on her own. It would probably would have been nice if Gloria and Mike could have reconciled during the show's run,it could have lasted longer than 1 season. Actually, Gloria ranked higher in the ratings than Archie Bunker's Place, Gloria was #19, and Archie Bunker's Place finished in a tie with Laverne and Shirley for #25.

See that's what i don't understand because those are good ratings and both shows were yanked. They could have gave Gloria a new man. But do u know why the Gloria Pilot which was a ABP episode wasn't aired by CBS?

I Would have liked to see her marry that Guy that was sleeping in her house at the begining of the Gloria Pilot today. He seemed to not like her, That could have been a nice twist.

Yes, I saw on TVTOME that the episode on Archie Bunker's Place,Gloria-- The First Day was unaired. I don't really know why though. Anyone knows why they didn't air it???

P.S. Since the real pilot didn't air, I take it back about when Gloria and Joey moved in their new home,I think it was the 2nd part of Gloria Comes Home on Archie Bunker's Place was when that happened.

CBS rejected the first Gloria Pilot the one you saw as part of Archie Bunker's Place. A seconcd pilot was made which became the first episode of Gloria but with a new production team and a few changes in the cast.

I actually liked the pilot i saw today on TV LAND with the Archie character driving Gloria and Joey to their new home. The pilot that is the first episode of Gloria was weak.

The pilot shown yesterday was never intended to be shown as part of ABP (which is why the closing credits are so different). After CBS had the pilot reshot (using different producers), Carroll O'Connor refused to have anything more to do with "Gloria", which is why we never saw any further crossovers. The original pilot never aired on CBS, but premiered in syndication when ABP was first distributed to local stations. The producers simply attached the ABP opening to the pilot, and included the "Gloria" cast below the title.

The reason "Gloria" was cancelled was the same reason all those shows that aired after "Friends" ("Single Guy", "Union Square", "Inside Schwartz", etc.) were cancelled even though they placed in the top 20. If you're following a very highly-rated show, and you lose a big chunk of the audience, the network will drop you. In this case, ABP and "Gloria" aired after 60 Minutes, which was the #1 show in 1982-83. CBS felt that the shows airing after "60 Minutes" should also place in the top 10 (in previous years, they mostly did), and decided to try something new there. ABP and "Gloria" actually moved to Monday nights in midseason, where they didn't perform all that well, either. Some might argue that ABP was dragging down "Gloria", but I don't think "Gloria" was particularly strong from a creative standpoint.

They Replaced Carroll O’Connor’s people ie Joe Gannon, Harriet Weiss and Patt Shea who wrote and produced the first Pilot they also moved Production of Gloria from CBS Television City to the Universal City Studios complex cross-town thereby cutting O’Connor out of the loop. Sally Struthers must not have been happy about any of this considering she and Carroll were very close.

I think the spinoff Gloria wasn't strong because the Gloria character wasn't a secondary character on All in the Family.

I knew that Gannon, Weiss, and Shea were dropped, but I didn't know about the studio change. Very interesting.

I felt that they could have kept the show. BTW SOLOMON I do agree with the fact that the 1st ep of "Gloria" in it's run was weak. I prefer the pilot and think that the character "Clark" sucked bug time.

If she wasn't a secondary character, what the heck was she? She was a very important character on AITF.
