Where's Dobie Gillis? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I'm posting on this site because I hope many of you remember Bob Denver's earlier,and better role as Maynard.I used to love seeing reruns of Dobie Gillis when I was ten-and quickly stopped thinking of Bob Denver as Gilligan.Maynard was a sensitive,individual, profound and lovable schnook and he could be seen as a real human being throughout most of the 4-year run of The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis.

Bob Denver could have gone on to a better acting career if his next regular role wasn't Gilligan-who had the initial naivite/stupidity Maynard had,but became much more a bufoon than Maynard ever was.

Once,when Bob Denver was making a speech when he guested on Evening Shade,he said,"You can plan a three-hour tour,but be permanently sidetracked."I saw a double-meaning,for Gilligan's Island was a three-year show that got him permanently typecast.

Dobie Gillis was a great show,a true reflection of the times and with definite values that so many people seem to neglect today.Will it ever be added to this site?I hope next year to see others shows on this site like Dobie Gillis or(another favorite) Donna Reed.

I understand how the timelessness of Gilligan can be more popular than the timeliness of Maynard.(Sigh)If more faves of mine aren't added-or even talked about-here I just might leave this place.It's pretty dull anyway.

Well if you leave, I'd might as well close up shop then <sniff>.. a Dobie Gillis board? perhaps..

I wish there were more posts on some of the boards, but really what can I do? I can't force people to post and I'm sure some people see that there are few posts on some of them and say to themselves why should I post here when there's no activity. Message boards are one of the tougher things to get started. For some of the boards like The Facts of Life, Happy Days, and Gilligan's Island I have sites that have an audience that bring people to the board - others I have to hope that they will somehow find them..

I don't think anyone blames you, TJ. There's really not much you can do about the inactivity of most of these boards, but I understand where Richard is coming from. It's hard to generate discussion about shows that haven't been in production for the past 15 or so years and don't even run in syndication anymore (i.e. Different Strokes). The only time any message board seems to pick up a little bit of traffic is when NAN picks it up, and broadcasts it to younger audiences who were too young to watch it during its first run (which probably explains why there are so many people under the age of 15 who frequent these boards). I don't think you should just close up shop, though, because a lot of people still use and enjoy your site.

Thank you for being more honest,B-BallJac.I do realize,regretfuly,that Dobie Gillis was a show of it's time-but the sort of situations that Max Shullman and other writers dreamed up for Dobie,Maynard,Zelda,etc. were in many cases the sort of situations that could happen to teens.I wonder how many other people who happened to see Dobie Gillis when it was on Family Channel or Nick-at-Nite first viewed Maynard as,"Gilligan with a goatee."

TJ,thank you for responding to my question and also for giving a fair assesment of why there are some shows that are not included- maybe because they are too unknown in this day and age.Perhaps it is asking too much for people who saw shows then and really remember them to discover this place and start giving trivia or even chatting with other fans.But perhaps,if enough time passes,there will be more people here-and more shows.

No problem Richard, I wish there were hundreds more people like you who participate and post on many of the boards. I've switched it back so registration is not required, so hopefully that will bring in some more posts. I was surprised when I looked at the stats that there were 500 people who had registered who had never posted a single message and 500 more who had only posted 1 time.

And btw, The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis board has been added!
