Question Hi! I'm new!

Hi there!

I'm new to Barney Miller and this board. I've recently started watching what I think is one of the best written shows ever. I feel stupid for not tuning into this show sooner. I've been watching every night since about New Year's and I'm absolutely hooked. But since I came in at a time when TVLand was airing season 6 or 7, There's so much I have questions about. Perhaps some of you guys could help me.

First of all, Wojo is my absolute favorite charater, although I love them all. I'm dying to know what the story is behind Wojo's ball. What are the names written on it? Also, in the episode "Riot", he lost his ball. Is it ever found?

Also, the Jack Soo tribute episode isn't listed on TVLand in the guide. Is this an episode they show in normal syndication, or is it only shown on special occasions?

Thanks for any answers you might be able to give me! I'm sure I'll have more questions soon.

Welcome to the board Kitten,

I hope you find what I've found in this board, which is intelligent discussion by an intelligent and respectful group of folks.

I would suggest that you start out your BM experience by visiting this site:
http://www.sitcomsonline.com/barneymiller.html

By reading what's there and following the links, you will become fairly well-versed in Barney Miller-ology! At the bottom of the page, there are some helpful links, and I would particularly recommend going to the episode guide from classicsitcoms.com, which not only lists all the episodes, but makes relevant commentaryon them when appropriate.

I would also suggest going back and reading the postings that have already been made since they contain a lot of really good insight regarding characters and different episodes.

Now, for your questions!

Wojo's ball is from the 1938 World series and it has signatures from some of those players. Inspector Luger happened to be in attendance and wanted to buy the ball at one point (Wojo ended up giving him one with fake signatures by a forger in custody, who included the name 'John Hancock'). It is not directly addressed, but the ball is found and resumes its regular places on Wojo's desk.

The Jack Soo Retrospective was the last episode of the '78-'79 season, and it was shown by TV Land a few weeks back. TV Land takes out about 4 minutes off every episode to make more room for commercials. The Jack Soo Retospective was no different and suffered the loss of what many consider Nick's funniest moment ever).
