On the episode "Beaver's Big Contest", Beaver enters
and wins a sports car. Of course Ward won't let Beaver keep the car and Beaver has to sell it. At the Breakfast table, Beaver is giving Ward the silent treatment and ask June to past a classified ad to Ward about selling the car. On the this classified ad we see a close up of the Cleaver's phone number: "WH 1-2-7-3-8" However, when Ward reads the ad he recites the phone number back as "Whitney 2738" completely omitting the "1" Once again through inscrutable viewers like myself and others, we catch the writers and directors in a continuity error eluding to the 6 digit phone number theory but in actuality confirm the existence of a 7 digit phone number. As posted before, I have witness June and Beaver dial 6 digit numbers and I have seen Wallly dial even a 5 digit number and then right after that dial a 6 digit number. Has anyone witness an acutally 7 digit dialing of a number on the show. Cory

I noticed on Beavers Monkey on the ad for the monkey they list the phone number as being Mayfield 2-4269. When I grew up our numbers were listed like that too, although we still had to dial 7 digits the first two were listed as letters. Blackbrook 7-5555 or BL7-5555. Before my time though people only had to dial 7-5555. Because the town was small enough to know who's number it was.
