Smile Gilligan: The Movie

Okay, it's time to cas the castaways... if they where to make a Gilligan's Island movie, who would you like to see playing the roles of the castaways? I saw a mock-up movie poster once that had some interestig choices on it, but I think that ths movie shoudlbe cast by a consensus of the fans! I will wait to post my choices till after a few others have posted.

That's a good question.

For Ginger, the first actress to pop into my mind was Nikki Cox:

I'm not a big fan of red heads, but Nikki Cox would make a great Ginger. She's not a great actress, but that's hardly a major pre-requisite for this movie.

For Gilligan, the only actor who really came to mind, was Jim Carey:

He can handle all the clumsy antics that Gilligan does. I like him a lot better when he plays more serious roles, but there's really no one I can think of who can play a better Gilligan.

The Professor is your portotypical Hollywood pretty boy, so there could be lots of candidates for this. His hair is a little bit darker, but you might as well go with Mel Gibson:

He's got a deep voice, and the looks are close enough. He'd have no problem with the role.

For the Skipper, you just need a big, funny, fat guy. Too bad Chris Farley is dead, but John Goodman wouldn't be a bad choice:

For Mr. Howell, you need an old guy, who can be real snooty. George Burns and Frank Sinatra are dead, and no Kennedy wants to be apart of this flick, so Dick Van Dyke is the only one I could come up with. Not that he really plays roles like this, but I think he can handle it.

As for Mrs. Howell, we need someone to play a rather snooty charcter, and Rue Mclanahan fits the part. She was very snooty and obnoxious as Blanche, on the Godlen Girls.

As for the most important role of all, Mary Anne will be portrayed by Salma Hayek:

She will of course receive speech therapy for two hours a day, and she will eventually get rid of that accent, and will play a wonderful Mary Anne.

Hmmm... very interesting choices there... but a little bit on the "old" side for my pleasure. And your visual aids made the post quite enjoyable! Let's see if I can do that type of thing for my picks...

I have sevearl different ways to cast this film, each effected by the director attatched. For this post, I'll put up my picks for a Gilligan's Island Movie as directed by Barry Sonnenfield (who brought us "Men in Black" and "Wild Wild West"). I'll do my choices in the order of their mention in the theme song. First up: Gilligan!

Seth Green from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and the "Austin Powers" movies has the youth and the right look to pull off our bumbling first mate.

The Skipper

Will Sasso of MadTV is a good heavy-set over-the-top type of actor who would make a great (allthough young) Johnas Grumby.

The Millionaire (Thurston Howell III)

Michael Douglas has a great air about him that just screams "Millionaire". He will make a grat Mr. Howell, escpecially when combined with Mrs. Howell...

Susan Sarandon can play just the right amount of class to make Mrs. Howell come alive on screen.

The Movie Star (Ginger Grant)

Angelina Jolie. No question in my mind. She is sex on a stick, which is exactly what we want for Ginger.

The Professor

Paul Ruebens (yes, Pee Wee Herman) is my choice for the Professor. Paul is a very accomplished actor, and I think he would have a great time playing the socially inept Professor. And now, Finally, my choice for the castaway of all castaways...MARYANNE!!!

Wynona Ryder was, is, and always shall be my choice for the perfect MaryAnne. And when contrasted to Angelina Jolie as Ginger, the chemistry between the two characters would be incredible!

Next time I post, I'll be giving the cast of the movie as written and directed by film maker Kevin Smith (of "Clerks" and "Dogma" fame, amongst other films).

Thumbs up

Cool picks (and pics).

Seth Green seems like an interesting choice. I don't know why, but he seemed like he'd be too short to play the role of Gilligan, and I haven't really seen him do any of Gilligan's clumsy antics. I've really only seen him in Can't Hardly Wait and Airborne. In Airborne, he played that typical "on the bringe of society, gawky, loner" type role, in which he plays a rather humorous character that is a brunt of alot of the jokes, so I'm sure he could handle it.

I've never seen Mad Tv, but Will Sasso certainly fits the part, physically.

I concur with your choice for Michael Douglas as Mr. Howell. He'd be a much better choice than Van Dyke.

Susan Sarandon is a good choice for Mrs. Howell. She bugs the hell out of me, but she has that "I'm better than you" type of aura that Mrs. Howell possessed.

Angeline Jolie is hot, no doubt, but she's a freaking nut job. I liked her in Gia (was there a scene in that movie where she was wearing clothes?), but she just doesn't have a clean cut image to her at all. Not that Ginger should necessarily be clean cut, but it'd be tough to explain why Ginger has a giant tattoo on her left arm that reads "BILLY BOB THORTON"

I won't even go into your choice for the prof. (I couldn't stand him when I was six, and I haven't exactly grown to love him since that time ), but Wynona is a cool choice for THE castaway. I think that picture of Selma Hayek pretty much shows the limits to her talents as an actress, but Wynona is a legitimate actress.

I think the biggest problem with my movie would be the potential expense to make this film! Don't Jim Carrey and Mel Gibson command 20 mil. plus each?!? Rue, Dick, John, and Selma would also be rather costly. The only cheap one (no pun intended) would probably be Nikki Cox. Plus, I was planning on making my directoral debut, and pocketing a cool 5 million for my services (which is of course the first indicator that this film will be nothing but box office poison ).

I know this topoic is over a month old, but I thought I'd add a little contribution. I think Betty White would be a good Mrs. Howell...

Um, 3 of the original cast memebers are deceased, one refuses to do anything GI related, and the other 3 are too old anyway. I mean, if it's a movie about them getting stranded on the island, they're going to have to get people who are the same age (give or take some years) as the originals were during the sixties

Easy sollution; difg up the boddies and force Tina Louise to play the role of Ginger at gunpoint. I'm sure that we could get the fine folks at Jim Henson's production company to hollow out the corpses and make them in to flesh-muppets of some sort!

*Shudder* Now that post just freaked me out. Anyways I've got an idea. How about makeing clones of all the actors, then in about sixy-five years they'll be the right age to shoot gilligan's island.
