the end of PAX ? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Last night I was talking to a friend of mine who works at a PAX station on the east coast and asked her why the cutbacks at PAX.

She said a lot of it had to do with the "deal" with NBC. NBC will no longer work with PAX by the end of the year. She says that this may mean the re-broadcasts of the news from the local NBC outlets , chances are will end ( it already has at her station ). I guess shows like Weakest Link and the like will end too since I believe NBC produces them.

She predicts one of two things will happen..

1. go back to more reruns

2. goodbye...unless they ( PAX ) makes some deal with another network ( CBS, Disney, ect.. ) so they can get money to make shows.

After talking to her, she even questioned a need for PAX? In this day and age of cable & satellite with such "family" channels like Disney, Boomerang, ABC Family, Toon Disney, Cartoon Network, Hallmark, Goodlife,the various Discovery channels ( I know they have one just for kids ), WAM !!!, HBO family as well as a more family friendly ABC. And I havent even gotten to the religious outlets like Trinity or Wisdom. I see her point. There is a lot of competition for the "family" dollar. True , not all these channels are available to everyone but a good many are.

I wish them well , but PAX may have to start thinking about changing its focus.

PAX went downhill in a big hurry because it took off Touched By An Angel and a bunch of other shows,and all they show on there now are paid programming from late at night to 4:00 in the afternoon,all the good shows on there are either prempted by local San Antonio news or their lifestyle show!!! They don't show my favorite show, Shop Till You Drop because of it!!! The only reruns they show now is Diagnosis Murder!!! So I think that the PAX Network may be history in the near future!!!

The only show I ever watched on PAX is Supermarket Sweep. If they do fold the cards, I hope another channel gets the rights to SS.

I agree that Pax has become dated and has stiff competition from other similar networks. I do think they should change their format and try something new.

ITA. Pax needs to either a) go towards the 80s (I would enjoy it airing classic 80s shows) or classics, or just fold, period. I personally wouldn't mind a complete overhaul whichever way it goes, modern or classic. Of course, I would prefer classic, lol, but that's not going to happen, so, who really knows what could happen. Pax is failing big time and needs to do something fast.

Here in Portage, MI, our PAX station is also our WB station. Right now, all the WB shows are broadcast from 6-8 p.m. a day late. So I'm kind of hoping that PAX goes under so we can get a full-time WB station. Plus, that might help up the number of old sitcoms on the air here.

PAX doesn't have a good quality of shows on it. They need to get some of the "Classics" on there. I know people were mentioning "Empty Nest", and maybe others like Facts of Life and Laverne And Shirley...Happy Days?

PAX is a waste of broadcast. Hopefully, a better network comes along. I won't be surprised if a cable network attempts to make it in broadcast.

Lifetime, or MTV will do VERY well.

I would love to see Pax add classic sitcoms and stuff, or someone purchases it. But, I don't see it happening any time soon.

I think PAX'S Televison will be here for many years to come they will have great programming only if we can get the Paid Ptogramming off The afternoon Schedule.

You are half right. PAX itself will be around for years ( they I believe own most if not all their stations ), the network PAX,
should be interesting to see what happens once NBC backs away

( When NBC had their anniversary special awhile back they thanked/mentioned all the networks they deal with. MSNBC, CNBC, ect..but not PAX ).

Dont hold your breath about PAX dropping their infomericals. They make money off them. Maybe they are saving money mow to create more shows later. Then again what happens when they run out of money.

They would be better off going back to airing Here's Lucy, Eight is Enough, ect... Since so many of these shows have been absent for so long, it will be almost ( for many ) watching a "new" program. Be cheaper for them than trying to come up with new shows and/or looking for a partner with cash.

Guys,

There is enough quality family programming out there with digital cable and satellite TV services. Although the rates are pricey, this is more due to inflation and overhead costs more than anything else. PAX lost what little quality it had when it dropped many of its original sitcomes. However, the only show that I ever watched with regularity was 'The Hogan Family.'

It would be in PAX's best interest to move away from the family/religious programing and go to a classic sitcoms network. TV Land, for example, has lost the rights to many shows that so many of us enjoy. What's wrong with PAX moving to a sitcom format with shows such as:

The Odd Couple
Green Acres
The Addams Family
The Munsters (Rights expire for TV Land later this year)
Dragnet
Adam-12
Empty Nest

All of these shows, with the exception of Empty Nest, aired on TV Land at some time. Who would complain with classic shows like these? The move in this industry has to be to bring back the old classics in the afternoon. Maybe, God willing, PAX wouldn't chop up some of these shows like TV Land does, but at least it's a format that would work for PAX, and I believe the majority of its viewers.
