Question General, Random Observations to discuss...

I've noticed a couple things, and not sure how they work out...

1. I recently caught an episode that showed a door from the living room to the hallway. It was similar to the front door, but I don't know why it was there. I can't remember the episode, because I was half-asleep when it was on, but I remember thinking I had never noticed it before.

Anyone?

2. Toward the end of the series, Blanche/Rue either lost some weight, had a face-lift, or something. The episode where Jerry Kennedy comes over, Blanche changes into a skin-tight black dress. Now, I don't remember her wearing things like that, but she looked 10 years younger.

Anyone?

3. Was it ever explained on Empty Nest, after Sophia joined, what happened to Blanche and Rose? At the end of Golden Palace, they had the hotel. But when the show was cancelled, what happened to them?

Anyone?

Also...

Betty/Rose frequently wears a sapphire and diamond ring. I wonder if that is something that her deceased husband gave her. I didn't know if it was an engagement ring or what.

ANYONE?

Well in regards to face lifts, there is a dramatic difference between Rue's appearance in her own IP and Bea's she looks ten years younger.

About Betty's jewelry she always seemed to wear jewelry that was a little too nice for her character. I remeber seeing a gold necklace on her the other night and I have also noticed her saphire ring. I suspect she wore her own.

You're right, she does look much younger. Did she have a facelift ever?

Katie -- any info here??

Yep, Betty did wear her own jewelry, which is why it was also so fancy.

In regards to Rue and cosmetic surgery, she has had quite a bit of work done, starting in the 1970s (I want to say around '74 but I could be a little off). She hasn't always had those cat eyes. I know she started off with at least a face lift and rhinoplasty (nose job), and has had her fair share of at face lifts (at least) since then. In a December 2001 TV Guide article, Rue talked about having a face lift in the next year, so she very well may have had one not that long ago. What made her (and all of the ladies) look so good on Bea's Intimate Portrait was the soft glow camera effect.

Rue also had a breast lift around 1990, which would've improved her overall figure (though she did lose quite a bit of weight at the start of the 7th season).

I don't think it was ever explained what happened to Blanche/Rose, but I could be wrong.

OK... let's see what else doesn't make sense...

1. Why didn't Big Daddy go for Mammy Watkins after Blanche's mother died?

2. What was up with Dorothy's sleeves rolled up all the time???

3. How many times did Sophia go back to her homeland (Siciliy or the area) during the shows run?

4. Why didn't Rose stay at the grief center?

3. I think Sophia goes back twice. Once for the San Genero festival with Auggie. (That's the one where Sophia and Rose bowl against Dorothy and Blanche.) She also goes back to make amends with Guido Spirelli, Sophia's first husband though an arranged marriage in Sicily, which she had annulled days later. She was also going to go back when she wanted to jump bail when they accused her of setting fire to a retirement home, but she didnt make it.

4. Well, remember when Charlie's pension is cut off in "Rose Fights Back?" She says she doesnt't make enough money working at the grief counselling center, so she seeks help from Enrique Mas, and ends up working for him. So I guess she left for the money.

I guess Rose worked at two different grief centers; on one of the first few episodes she gets fired from a grief counseling job (that's the one where she gets depressed about being old). And then, the one that was mentioned above, that was in a later season. It's weird though, 'cuz the FIRST grief-counseling-quit episode ended up with Rose saying she got a job as a waitress at a Coffee Shop, or malt shop or something. But, y'know, she has to leave ANOTHER center later in the series. Maybe the first grief center was the last episode of the first season?

This is very interesting though, I'm not sure why there are so many differences during the show's run. I wonder that myself although I don't remember there being another grief counseling center for Rose to work in but I remember the first one.

Remember? That crook disguised as Santa Clause held them at "gunpoint" in one of the Christmas episodes.

Charlie sold horse shoes. Can't remember the episode, but Rose said Charlie sold lots of stuff, but horse shoes were his favorite.
