I came across the following news item, regarding the passing on Friday of the last remaining widow of a Union soldier. Considering the fact that the Civil War ended 138 years ago, this is pretty amazing! Not only that, but I saw an article a few months ago which stated there are about 3 or 4 widows of Confederate soldiers still living!
BLAINE, Tenn. - Gertrude Janeway, the last widow of a Union veteran from the Civil War, has died in the log cabin where she lived most of her life. She was 93. Bedridden for years, she died Friday, more than six decades after the passing of John Janeway, who married her when he was 81 and she was barely 18. An honorary member of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Janeway was the last recognized Union widow. She received a $70 check each month from the Veterans Administration. |

That is an interesting article Jimbo. It reminds me of the Titanic survivors, if there are any....or when reading the obituaries, I see those flags indicating Veterans. I read that WWII Veterans are dying away at a fast rate.
I also think it's interesting that Abraham Lincoln has no direct descendents. He lost two children in their childhood. Although his remaining children had children, those children did not. |

Also, as you've stated, WW II veterans are now, unfortunately, rapidly dying off. I think that Tom Brokaw's book, "The Greatest Generation", was an appropriate title. The men and women who fought against the Axis Powers literally saved the world. I did not know that Abraham Lincoln has no direct descendants. I'm always learning something new on this site! |

I agree that 18 to 80 is an odd combo. Then again, sometimes two people can find true love despite a significant difference in age......there's Anna Nichole Smith, for example.
