'The Futon Critic' Says Goodbye - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

The Futon Critic has been shut down...here is the note that appears on the front of the site. To me, I went there everyday for information to report, and now its gone...it was a great site!

***So I knew one day I'd have to write this column. It just feels really weird finally writing it:

It's time to shut down The Futon Critic.

I'm sure this seems rather abrupt seeing how it's been updated continuously up until this column, however it's a decision I've been wrestling with for quite some time now. You see, this site has been an enormous part of my life for the past seven years (all the way back to when it started at my college's newspaper) and it's gotten to the point where I simply can't do it any more. It's turned from a labor of love into something of a chore and that's the last thing I ever want this site to be. More to the point, it's cut into the reason this site existed all along: the love of television.

Overall it feels like I've been treading water in increasingly rapid waters this past year: there are lots of things I want to do to make this site better but my energy to do them seems to drop with each passing day. I don't want to be the half-assed Futon Critic, I want to be the usual jovial, enjoying television Futon Critic. Boy, how depressing do I sound? Anyway, I'm not one on big good-byes or tear-filled farewells.

But I do think it's worth mentioning that I will remember all of you. I'll remember all the giant e-mails I received from you about how much you love your favorite shows. I'll remember how much they reminded me why this site existed in the first place. Overall it's been a fantastic experience and I don't regret any of it.

So is this good-bye forever? Who knows. Maybe the fire will come back to me in a few months. I just know it's not there right now. Plus, it doesn't help that while I'd love to think that running this site could be my vocation for the rest of my life, I have other opportunities I have to explore. Those who know me well know that I have aspirations to be on the "other side" of what I've been reporting here at the site. I don't want to split my energies between that and running The Futon Critic as it will diminish my efforts in both.

So 2,000 series, 28,000 Showatch entries, 650 columns and God knows how much else later it's time to hang up the Futon Critic. Thanks for all your support over the years. I won't forget any of it. ***

Well that definitely sucks. I went there all the time as well for info.
