Default Patricia Heaton walks off Awards Show

Provided by PageSix.com

TV STAR BOLTS 'VULGAR' AWARDS

by By RICHARD JOHNSON
with Paula Froelich and Chris Wilson

"EVERYBODY Loves Raymond" star Patricia Heaton has a message for the raucous Osbournes - shut up, already!
Heaton, incensed over the family's lewd and profane language at the American Music Awards on Monday, stormed out in the middle of the show, refusing to go on stage for her segment of the ABC- televised event.

"I'm no prude, but this was such a vulgar and disgusting show," Heaton told the Cleveland Plain Dealer (where her brother is a reporter). "What was passing for humor basically ranged from stupid to vulgar - and I just thought, 'I'm not going to be part of this.'

"So I walked out and said, 'Get my car - I'm leaving.' "

The Osbournes - Sharon, Ozzy and surly teenage kids Kelly and Jack - were hosting the awards on ABC. Their MTV reality show, "The Osbournes," is legendary for its bleeped profanity.

Heaton, who stars as comely wife Debra Barone in "Raymond" opposite Ray Romano, was supposed to present a video retrospective encompassing the last 30 years of the American Music Awards.

But she just stood up and walked out of the Shrine Auditorium in Hollywood - saying she was disgusted by the "onslaught of lewd jokes and off-color remarks.

"The entire evening became about bleeping," she told the Plain Dealer. "It was as if they were trying to become more like the MTV awards. But it's one thing if this kind of stuff is on MTV at 10 at night. It's quite another if it's on ABC at 8 o'clock. I don't know what Dick Clark was thinking."

Heaton said she was particularly furious over a performer's allusion to three-way sex and Sharon Osbourne's joking about Mariah Carey's "fake" endowments (Heaton herself has copped to having her breasts, er, endowed).

"I really didn't know what I was getting into," Heaton said. "I mean, there was ['American Idol' co-host] Ryan Seacrest pulling open his co-presenter's shirt, then noticing there was a 12-year-old girl in the front row. And he says, 'Don't worry, honey, you'll have a pair of these soon.' And everybody went crazy.

"It felt like I was in the Roman Colosseum. As far as I'm concerned, it was an affront to anyone with a shred of dignity, self-respect and intelligence."

Heaton was replaced by a prerecorded audio clip introducing the retrospective.

I heard about this from many places and everywhere I've heard it, she was applauded.

Patricia Heaton has once again proven that she is a woman of principle, and is not afraid to buck the Hollywood establishment by standing up for her beliefs. I applaud her for taking this stand.

I agree Jimbo. She is a woman of conviction. I watched a profile on TV about her, and she stated that she's pro-life. To me, that's a brave statement to make for the profession she's in.

While I do find The Osbournes quite amusing to watch on MTV, their act doesn't play well elsewhere.

Stick with MTV Osbournes, the networks are offensive enough...

I've always thought it was weird how much sexual harassment Hollywood gets away with, but to drag a 12-year-old girl into it is really an atrocity. Anyone outside of show business would have been in serious trouble for that and rightly so.

Thumbs up Thumbs up for Heaton

Good for her! The Osbournes are a mockery of the human race! How can people find this freaky, out of control, discusting family amusing? Why would anyone choose them to host an award ceremony?
I think it's GREAT that Heaton took a stand and left! I wouldv'e done the same thing! I applaud her in her actions! Hey...at least there's one celebrity that has some values!
And what's this about that 12 year-old girl? I don't even want to get into that! A complete digrace is all I have to say!
I would have hoped there would have been more celebrities at that award show like Heaton.

Good work Patty, but then why did she go and have her breasts done if she is such a prude??? Anyway if she spent all the money on them she should show them off a little more!

ELR also does deal with racy subject matter at times which I think is inappropriate for children. It is on a network in prime time but this does not seem to bother her? I am trying to think of the subjects i was put off by, one was breast enhancement episode, also the episode devoted to how many times the couples had sex.
