Question Richard Rickover

Does anyone know what happened to Richard Rickover? He was gone for most of the last season.

I really don't know. I really liked Richard. It's also weird that not only Beaver and Richard were friends on the show, but they were like best friends in real life and I believe they still are best friends.

Richard Rickover appeared in just two episodes in the last season of LITB, Beaver's Football Award and The Late Edition, both of those episodes originally airing in October 1962. I'm not sure why he disappeared at that time, but I think Whitey was back more often after that, and Gilbert seemed to be Beaver's closest friend in the last season. It's interesting that Richard, Whitey, and Gilbert never all three appeared in the same episode. Maybe the onstage classroom had a limit of three students?
Another thing I just found out from www.us.imdb.com was that Stanley Fafara was two years younger than Jerry Mathers, and therefore probably much younger than most of the other actors who played Beaver's friends. It's really noticeable in the last season, when Beaver and Gilbert seem to be at least a head taller than Whitey, though Stanley Fafara was likely short for his age anyway.
Larry Mondello and Judy Hensler disappeared for good early in the 4th season (1960), I don't know why, but I didn't miss either of them that much.

I know they all 3 appeared in "Junior Fire Chief," ep. #151 from season 4. And according to tvtome.com, they also all appeared in "Kite Day" and "Substitute Father" near the end of that same season, though I can only remember Gilbert in both of those.

There was another character, "Alan," who appeared as the 3rd friend in a few eps, such as "Night in the Woods" and "Long Distance Call." And in season 6 somtimes they went with some guys unseen before, like 'Mike' [Tim Matheson], 'Chuck,' and 'Kevin.'

I really liked Larry Mondello a lot. To me, he represents Beaver's most important and endearing friend of the series. Second to Larry, I would place Gilbert, as he became his best friend in the later years.

This is getting off topic, but I like Larry better than Gilbert. Both would tell Beaver to do things that would get him in trouble and then say, "Beaver, why did you do that?" but I always got the impression that Larry came closer to meaning well, whereas sometimes Gilbert almost delighted in sabotaging Beaver. Also, Gilbert seemed more likely to flee the scene after his suggestions got Beaver into trouble.

I agree 100%. I always liked Larry better because of that very reason.

I LOVE that episode so much!!!! The Late Edition, not the football one. I always lose it when Beaver finds out he beat up a girl and Richard says "Uh-oh. OH NO!!!" For some reason, it always cracks me up! That girl was really cute with Beaver. I was kinda upset at their parents in the episode where he gives her a locket and the parents totally freaked out.

I liked Richard better than any of Beaver's other friends. Gilbert and Larry used him, and Whitey was a brat. Also, in the early episodes, Wally had friends named Toohey and Chester. What happened to them? They were much nicer than Eddie and Lumpy.

I agree. Chester was cute! Actually, I thought Wally was a doll! Very handsome with beautiful eyes!

I used to have kinda a crush on Richard! I liked Chester, too he kinda looked like Wally. Oh, and that Eddie Haskell was so funny in his sneaky, mischevious ways. "Good morning Mrs. Cleaver. My what a pretty dress!"

I stand corrected on my earlier point about Richard, Gilbert, and Whitey never appearing on the same episode. The appeared together in the late-3rd season ep The Last Day of School, cleaning out their lockers together. I never have noticed them all together in the last two years, which are the eps that I've seen the most.
